Pelé is not one to stay quiet when someone challenges his throne as the best soccer player ever. The Brazilian icon updated his Instagram account recently in which he still claims to be the player with the most goals scored in the history of soccer.
Pelé claims that he has scored a total of 1,283 goals in his great career, although the Brazilian great may be counting goals scored in friendlies and non-official matches. Although in Pelé’s defense some records have been lost and it might be hard to pin-point exactly how many goals he has but accounted for Pelé has 767 official goals.
Meanwhile Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored 2 goals against Udinese to start 2021 scored 776 goals in his career, surpassing another Brazilian great Romario who scored 772. Ronaldo sits second as the sports all-time leading goal scorer behind Josef Bican who scored over 800 goals in his career.
Pelé Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi controversy
In recent weeks Pelé’s records have come under review, on December 22, Lionel Messi scored his goal number 644 for Barcelona making him the all-time leading scorer for a player with one club. Santos, Pelé’s former team came out with a statement which indicated as per their records Pelé had scored 1,091 goals for the club. Even though Pelé himself congratulated Messi on social media after he scored the go-ahead goal.
With Cristiano Ronaldo on the other hand, things seem to have gotten heated as Pelé himself has taken to social media, by updating his profile, Pelé is refuting the claim that Cristiano Ronaldo has overtaken him as the sports all-time leading goal scorer. Although with said update Pelé in turn is claiming to have scored more official goals than Romario and Josef Bican.
