The US national team had to fight hard but they finally defeated Jamaica 1-0 with a late goal to seal their ticket to the Gold Cup 2021 semifinals. The hero of the night was Matthew Hoppe, who scored at 83th minute to give the US the victory.

The first half didn’t have many occasions for either team, as the game was played mostly on half court. However, Jamaica started to grow and had some chances to put Turner to the test. The US goalkeeper responded with great saves and the US started to create chances too.

In the second half, Berhalter moved the pieces with Roldán and Zardes entering in the pitch. However, it was Matthew Hoppe, who had some shots before, who finally could make the first with a header and help his team reach the semifinals. Here, check out the highlights and goal:

On the other hand, Jamaica reached the knockout stage after finishing second in their group, with wins over Suriname and Guadeloupe. However, they were defeated by Costa Rica in their last match and will try to bounce back to win over the United States, as they did in 2015 to reach the final of the tournament.

The USA and Jamaica have met each other in the Gold Cup six times before. The US national team leads the series with five wins over the Reggae Boyz, who only got one, when they surpassed the Yanks in the 2017 semifinals.

The last time they faced each other in this tournament was two years ago, in the 2019 semifinals. The United States won 3-1 with goals from Christian Pulisic, who had a brace, and Weston McKennie. Shamar Nicholson was the scorer for their rivals.

Outside the Gold Cup, these two teams met earlier this year in an international friendly, with the USA getting a 4-1 win. Sebastian Lletget scored twice in that match and he will try to do the same again.
