Team USA will be led by April Ross, who is already an Olympic medalist, having won silver at London 2012 and bronze in Rio 2016. She is now looking for gold with her partner Alix Klineman after a 21-19, 21-19 victory over Germany’s Margareta Kozuch and Laura Ludwig in the quarterfinals.
On the other hand, the Swiss Heidrich and Verge-Depre outlasted Brazil’s Rebecca Cavalcanti Barbosa Silva and Ana Patricia Ramos 21-19, 18-21, 15-12 to reach the semifinals. These two are tough rivals for the US, as they have won one gold and two silver medals at the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour.

Switzerland vs USA: Storylines
Klineman and Ross are the last remaining U.S. team in the women’s beach volleyball tournament after Sarah Sponcil and Kelly Claes fell to Canada in the round of 16. They haveonly dropped one set through five matches. While Ross has plenty of experience at the Olympics, Klinema is a first-time Olympian.
While they are favorites, Ross doesn’t want to get too confident. “The field is so strong and there have been a lot of upsets,” Ross said as reported by volleyballmag.com. “We just go into every match ready to battle. I think you have to earn it every step of the way. It’s not like, ‘Oh I have a medal, I know how to do it,’ we have to fight really hard.”
While Switzerland girls have been a successful duo, they are also surprised by coming this far at the Olympics. “Amazing. It’s crazy. I don’t know, I don’t find the right words for it, but the feeling is amazing,” Heidrich said. The other semifinal will feature Taliqua Clancy and Mariafe Artacho of Australia vs. Anastasija Kravcenoka and Tina Graudina of Latvia.
