Diego Schwartzman, known as ‘El Peque,’ weighed in on the debate surrounding the Big Three, sharing his thoughts on the opponent who made the biggest impact when stepping onto the court. The former World No. 9, who faced Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal multiple times give an interesting perspective in the ‘Big Three’ debate.
The Argentine, known for his consistency on clay, enjoyed a successful career that included four ATP titles and a semifinal run at the 2020 French Open. He also reached the quarterfinals of the US Open and the Monte Carlo Masters, establishing himself as a tough competitor on the tour.
Speaking to ESPN, Schwartzman singled out Nadal as the most intimidating opponent. “I think Rafa, of the three, is the one who commands the most respect when you enter the court. It’s like you enter the court a little more defeated,” he said.
Nadal’s dominance over Schwartzman
Schwartzman faced the Big Three numerous times throughout his career but struggled to find success. Against Nadal, he played 12 times, securing just one victory—a straight-sets win in the 2020 Rome Masters quarterfinals. Before that, the Spaniard had beaten him in eight consecutive matches.

However, his record against Djokovic and Federer was even more lopsided. He lost all seven of his meetings with the Serbian and failed to win a set in four matches against the Swiss legend.

Nadal’s tribute to Schwartzman
Schwartzman officially retired earlier this month, playing his final tournament at the Argentina Open in Buenos Aires. He won his first-round match against Nicolas Jarry before falling to Pedro Martinez in the round of 16.
Following his farewell, Nadal, who retired in 2023, took to social media to acknowledge Schwartzman’s career. “Congratulations @dieschwartzman on your great career!” he wrote on X. “You’ve been a great example of fighting and overcoming. I’m glad we’ve shared so many moments on the Tour. Enjoy your next steps!”
So, even though the Spaniard might be one of the most intimidating players on the court, he remains one of the most beloved by his peers, always showing the utmost respect to his rivals on the ATP Tour.
