World No. 109 emerges as Wimbledon’s breakout star: Stuns 3 higher-ranked players and credits wife for success

This player, World No. 109, is the biggest surprise at Wimbledon this year—and he says his wife has been a key part of his success.

Tennis is often a logical sport. Generally, higher-ranked players beat lower-ranked ones, and it’s rare to see an unknown make a deep run at a top-level event—especially a Grand Slam. But every now and then, surprises emerge. And this year at Wimbledon, Kamil Majchrzak is one of them.

Majchrzak came into the third Grand Slam of the season ranked No. 109 in the ATP rankings. That didn’t set high expectations on paper, but he believed in himself—and through grit and a winning mindset, he’s survived the first week of the tournament.

The Polish player opened with a stunning win over World No. 35 Matteo Berrettini. “I had a pretty difficult draw. I played against Matteo, one of the best grass court players in the world. I came on court with no expectation, just to show some good tennis and be competitive,” Majchrzak said in an interview with the official website of the ATP Tour. “Then we started and I was in a good position and my game grew during the match. I was getting more confident. Believing more and then I did it.”

That performance gave him a huge boost, helping him take down two more top-100 players: Ethan Quinn in the second round and Arthur Rinderknech after that. “It’s a great achievement. It feels incredible. I’m super happy to be here,” he said.

“I was really fighting last year and the beginning of this year to be in the main draw, to maybe avoid qualifying and to get back to this legendary and magical club. I managed to do it and here I am now,” Kamil added. “I’m incredibly happy but I have more to come I think, I hope my story will keep going.”

Majchrzak credits his wife as a key for his success

In the same interview, Majchrzak made it clear that his wife, Marta, plays a major role not just in his personal life—but in his tennis career. “She’s everything in this team for me,” he said. We do physiotherapy together sometimes, she helps me with fitness programs, monitors me when I need her. She can feed balls for me on the court. She’s a former player, and she’s doing an amazing job for me. She’s able to sacrifice herself 100 per cent for me.”

Marta is a physiotherapist and fitness trainer, which has been a huge asset for Kamil as he prepares for the demanding challenges of life on tour. “She gives me advice for on court, helps me physically, pushes me and I can practise with her as she can feed and hit. We have spent a lot of time together during the years, so it is nice to have her by my side,” Majchrzak said.

What’s next for Majchrzak

Reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon is already a major milestone for Majchrzak. It marks the best Grand Slam performance of his career so far. Since making his debut at the 2018 Australian Open, the Polish player had never advanced past the third round in a major—and had only reached that stage once, at the 2019 US Open.

Now in the Round of 16, Majchrzak will look to continue making history at Wimbledon. He’s set to face Karen Khachanov this Sunday morning. If he wins, he’ll move on to the quarterfinals to face either Taylor Fritz or Jordan Thompson.
