The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/auburn">Auburn Tigers</a> didn’t have the season-finale they hoped for. After falling to the Alabama Crimson Tide at home in the Iron Bowl, the school confirmed Alex Golesh will be the head coach going forward in college football. 



Golesh is coming off a sensational year with the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/south-florida">South Florida Bulls</a>. Though the school fell short of the American Championship Game, the Bulls recorded a 9-3 record (6-2 conference) while taking down two ranked programs in the NCAA. Although the Bulls have earned bowl eligibility, Golesh won’t be on campus for that game, as he is headed to Auburn.



After three seasons in Tampa, Golesh is now moving to the next chapter in his coaching career. As he leaves town, he posted a brief, one-word reaction about his time with the University of South Florida.



“Grateful,” Golesh stated through his X account (formerly Twitter), along with a horns emoji and a picture of him and his family after the 52-3 victory against the Rice Owls.

With Golesh entering the picture, the Tigers have reason to believe the worst may be behind them. Bryan Harsin and Hugh Freeze couldn’t, but Golesh will hope for better luck as he takes over the reins.

Now, the Tigers will have to pay Freeze to leave the facilities on campus. According to reports from Sports Illustrated, Auburn must pay $15.8 million to Freeze. However, Freeze will face no mitigation. As he packs his bags, Freeze walks away with a 15-19 record as head coach in Auburn.



The last time Auburn won a bowl game in the NCAA was during the 2018 season. Then, the program led by Gus Malzahn defeated the Purdue Boilermakers by a score of 63-17 at the Music City Bowl at Nissan Stadium in Nashville.

He’s a zero excuse maker. He comes in and he studies and I just think the sky’s the limit for a guy with that size, that range, that arm strength, that IQ.“



Auburn is determined to abandon the SEC basement, and Freeze made sure to remind that to the Longhorns, Crimson Tide, Dawgs, and the top teams in the league.

“2025/26 War Eagle?” Tigers senior guard Chad Baker-Mazara stated on his X, formerly Twitter, account. His message is a hint at Auburn’s battle cry, which has its origin in 1892 and it could well mean he is staying in school for the 2025-26 campaign.

Baker-Mazara’s post made waves on social media, as the 25-year-old could still return for another season in the NCAA. If he declares for the 2026 NBA Draft, he’d enter the league at 26. To put it into perspective, LaMelo Ball, who debuted during the 2020-21 season, is only 23 years old now.



<h2>Not a farewell</h2>



Moreover, the suspense around Baker-Mazara’s future rises as he has yet to announce a clear decision on his next step after the loss in the NCAA Tournament.



“Auburn, love y’all. Y’all have made me better as a person and a player in so many ways. Even though we fell short of the chip, it was a great season—and there are no other fans like you guys,” Baker-Mazara previously wrote, without clarifying whether this marked the end of his time with the program.

While Auburn starters like Johni Broome, Denver Jones, Dylan Cardwell, and Miles Kelly ran out of eligibility in college basketball, Baker-Mazara has one year left of eligibility if he intends to use it. “We’re in postseason now. We’re shifting gears to postseason, and postseason is all about step up. It’s just all about step up,” Bruce Pearl said postgame, per On3. “As you get seeded a little bit better, so you have a better chance to advance through the tournament — which you earned and we worked for.”

<h2>Seeding</h2>



Auburn secured the number one seed in the SEC with two games to spare in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-basketball">college basketball</a> season. That sense of relief definitely impacted the program during their latest outings as they dropped consecutive games to the Aggies and the Crimson Tide.



Thanks to their finish in the top-4, Auburn secured two byes during the SEC’s first and second round. The Tigers don’t know their rival yet, though it will be whoever comes out on top in the second round matchup between #8 Ole Miss and the highest seeded program to advance in the first round.

<h3>Alabama’s scenario</h3>



The Crimson Tide finished as the #3 seed in the SEC and will enjoy two byes as well as the Tigers. Alabama will wait for its opponent, that will come out from #6 Kentucky’s second round matchup with the second-lowest seeded team to move on in the first round.

<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/alabama">Alabama</a> dropped its second straight loss in the SEC, after falling 99-94 to the Florida Gators at Coleman Coliseum. As the Crimson Tide shifts its focus onto the eternal rivals, Auburn Tigers, head coach Nate Oats sent a powerful reminder to his players.



After a buzzer-beater loss to Tennessee, No. 7 Alabama failed to get back in the win column during its Senior Night matchup against <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/florida">Florida</a>. The Crimson Tide has now lost two straight for the second time this season, previously dropping back-to-back games to Auburn and Missouri on Feb. 15 and 19.



Oats and the Tide will vie to avoid a three-game losing skid as they prepare for a crucial <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ncaa">NCAA</a> showdown against their in-state rivals in Auburn. Alabama’s last performance fell well short of the standard set by Oats and his staff, and the head coach didn’t mince words after the game.



“It doesn’t matter what your game plan is, if you don’t get back on defense and you can’t get a rebound,” Oats stated postgame, via On3. “We’re gonna have to figure it out before we go to Auburn. We’ve gotta to the No. 1 team in the country, we’ve gotta go to their place. It’s gonna be a tough game for us there.“

<h2>Low morale</h2>



The locker room in Tuscaloosa has been through the wringer lately. Back-to-back disappointing losses to SEC rivals could have a serious impact on their seeding for the conference tournament as the most important month in <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-basketball">college basketball</a> gets underway.

“We’re playing for a lot more than just – we obviously can’t win the regular-season championship. We knew that coming into this game,” Oats added. “But we’re playing for SEC Tournament seeding, we’re playing for NCAA Tournament seeding. I thought we’d get a little bit better effort than what we got out of some of these guys tonight.”



Though the losses have taken a toll on the team’s morale ahead of the Alabama-<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/auburn">Auburn</a> matchup, the Crimson Tide are already locked into the SEC quarterfinals, as they cannot fall below the No. 4 seed.

The No. 1 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/auburn">Auburn Tigers</a> fell in shocking fashion to the No. 22 Texas A&amp;M Aggies during their visit to College Station. Though the Tigers have already clinched the SEC regular season title and are heavy favorites for the NCAA tournament, head coach Bruce Pearl didn’t hide his frustration, making something clear about their performance.



Auburn’s six-game win streak was snapped at Reed Arena, as Texas A&amp;M delivered a statement victory over the apex predator in <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-basketball">college basketball</a>. The Tigers’ last defeat had been on Feb. 8 as they lost to the Florida Gators at Neville Arena.



While deflating for the team’s morale ahead of the crucial month of the year, the loss in College Station could become a strong reminder for the Tigers not to rest in their laurels. It also put on display the league’s strength, as the sixth seed in the SEC took down the No. 1 program in the country.



Auburn has only lost three games in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ncaa">NCAA</a> season, and just twice in their SEC schedule. However, Pearl had steam coming out of his ears after squandering the game against the Aggies.

“We just got physically punched in the mouth. We just got physically run out of here. They physically manhandled us,” Pearl admitted postgame, via USA Today. “And if this team is going to continue to win, we’re going to run up against teams like Texas A&amp;M or like Florida or like Duke that are big and physical.“

<h2>Out-muscled</h2>



The Aggies’ 83-72 win over the Tigers can be explained by the physical dominance the home team enforced on Auburn. Despite the Tigers posting better shooting percentages, the battle on the boards cost Pearl’s team heavily.



“We have no excuses to allow those guys to get 24 offensive rebounds,” Pearl added. “I give Texas A&amp;M all the credit. Our guys were physically dominated. So no, I don’t excuse our guys at all. We’re better than that, but not tonight.”



Texas A&amp;M finished the night with 41 total rebounds, while Auburn had just 25. The Aggies had one less offensive rebound than the Tigers had total rebounds, a recipe for disaster that helps illustrate why Auburn fell in The Lone Star State.

After the deflating defeat, head coach Mark Pope made something clear about Bruce Pearl’s Tigers.



The Wildcats missed a pivotal chance to shock the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ncaa">NCAA</a> with a statement victory over the No. 1 program in the nation. After the loss, Kentucky fell back to a .500 SEC record, and could drop further down in the AP rankings as they were dismantled by the visiting Tigers.



While the defeat stings and will linger in Lexington, Coach Pope knows better than to cry over spilled milk. As the team shifts its focus to the next challenge, he made an honest statement about <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/auburn">Auburn</a>.



“Right now, they are the best team in the country,” Kentucky coach Mark Pope said, per On3. “They punished us tonight, for sure.”

Auburn got off to a hot start, going on a 12-0 run early in the game, which made the night much easier for Pearl’s side. The first half ended 49-34 in Auburn’s favor, and <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/kentucky">Kentucky</a> couldn’t trim the lead in the second half.

<h2>Pope praises Pearl and his staff</h2>



Kentucky was hoping to build off of their nail-biting victory over Oklahoma, but Auburn proved to be too much for the Wildcats to hold off at Rupp Arena. After the game, Pope credited the Tigers for their sensational performance, for which he had no answers.



“It’s a real credit to their guys, to their players, and a real credit to coach [Bruce] Pearl and his staff because they do a lot of switching on the fly. There is a lot of communication on the fly.

When people ask how good <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/johnny-manziel">Johnny Manziel</a> was for the Texas A&amp;M Aggies, simply mentioning his nickname, “Johnny Football,” should suffice. While his NFL career was a major disappointment and his off-field antics often overshadowed his talent, Manziel will always be remembered for the incredible memories he etched his name into. Though some argue he was the greatest college player ever, Manziel himself has named who holds that title.



Since the first collegiate football game in 1869, played between Rutgers and the College of New Jersey (now Princeton), hundreds of players have been hailed as the greatest to ever play the game, while thousands more have left their mark on the sport.



Manziel’s impact on <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-football">college football</a> went beyond his on-field performance; it was his frenetic lifestyle and captivating attitude that won him the admiration of millions, while also earning the disdain of many others. In short, Manziel had “aura” before the word was even cool.



Manziel played as he lived, hanging on by a thread on the brink of disaster, but ultimately, and especially during his years in College Station, he got away with it. He was an all-out daredevil, his recklessness was on full display on the gridiron. As he led the Aggies on a Cinderella run during his first year in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ncaa">NCAA</a>, Manziel became the first player ever to win the Heisman Trophy as a freshman in 2012.

Although Manziel has a strong case to be the greatest of all time in college football, though unrelated his professional career stains his case. Manziel himself believes he isn’t worthy of that title, and instead named former Auburn Tigers quarterback <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/cam-newton">Cam Newton</a> as the best player in CFB history.

<h2>Super-Cam</h2>



Newton has made a very strong case to be crowned as the best of all time. His college journey was a rollercoaster in itself. Newton enrolled for the University of Florida and was a part of the 2008 Gators football team that went on to become BCS national champions, grabbing headlines nationwide along the way for non-football related topics.



After a short and often forgotten transfer to Blinn College, a JUCO school in Texas, in 2009, Newton committed to the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/auburn">University of Auburn</a>, where his career would skyrocket. His junior-year, Newton took college football by storm. As the Tigers won the BCS National Championship against Oregon, Newton finished a Heisman season with out-of-this-world numbers.

In 2010, Newton threw 2,854 yards, 30 touchdowns and 7 interceptions in 14 games. Moreover, he rushed for 1,473 yards on the ground, totalling 20 rushing touchdowns, he would also add a receiving score to highlight a historic season, one that may never be replicated again. Newton won the Heisman in 2010 and later went on to become an NFL MVP in 2015, joining an elite group of players to accomplish both feats.



<h2>Tim Tebow’s case</h2>



Like Manziel, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/tim-tebow">Tim Tebow</a> was given a catchy nickname, showcasing his immense popularity across the country. Dubbed “TebowMania,” the quarterback made a strong case for the GOAT conversation with his career in Gainesville.

While Newton had a magical 2010 season, Tebow’s consistency and longevity during his time at Florida may give him the upper hand. Newton only started for one season, whereas Tebow was a starter for three of his four years, with the exception of his freshman year. Even as a backup, however, he was part of the 2006 national championship-winning Gators team.



A two-time Maxwell Award winner and one-time Heisman Trophy recipient, along with a top-3 finish in another year, Tebow was a dominant force in college football. During his Heisman season in 2007, he posted staggering numbers: 3,286 passing yards, 32 touchdowns, and just 6 interceptions, while also adding 895 rushing yards and 23 rushing touchdowns.

The debate is endless, and to each their own. Vince Young, Tim Tebow, Cam Newton, Reggie Bush—the list could go on forever. Fans of different schools will always have differing opinions and will never reach a consensus on who the greatest was. 



Moreover, there is no definitive evidence to crown one undisputed GOAT. Thus, it’s largely based on perception, personal preference, and strong statistical backing—though even those can be contested. 



Year after year, college football sees superstars emerge, and while many players put on sensational seasons—perhaps due to nostalgia—they don’t seem to match the legacies left behind by greats like Newton, Manziel, and Tebow.
