The Colorado Avalanche may be firing in all cylinders at the best possible moment. With the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> postseason in the horizon, the Avalanche welcomed a Stanley Cup champion back to the ice for practice. Nathan MacKinnon, Cale Makar, and the rest of the Avs team could be getting a key talent and leader back, just in time for the playoffs.



After a crucial victory over the Dallas Stars, in a game with a Stanley Cup Playoffs feel to it, the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/colorado-avalanche">Avalanche</a> are looking to make it three wins in a row, as they travel up north to face the Toronto Maple Leafs on March 19.



Spirits are mile-high in Denver, especially after a star player made his return to the ice during the team’s practice prior to flying to Toronto. MacKinnon and Makar have already witnessed Mikko Rantanen leave the team, losing a key part of the team’s <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/stanley-cup">Stanley Cup</a> winning core in 2022. Fortunately, they are ever-closer to retrieving, perhaps, the most important piece to their puzzle.



Colorado captain Gabriel Landeskog returned to the ice, to join his teammates for practice after an arduous recovery journey from a freak knee injury. Landeskog has missed the entire 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons after playing his last game on June 26, 2022. That day, Colorado defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning and hoisted their third Stanley Cup in franchise history.

It’s been a long, almost perpetual healing process, with setbacks along the way, but it may finally be reaching it’s finish line. Landeskog skated with his teammates during the Avs’ practice, showing great form and being a huge motivation boost for <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/nathan-mackinnon">MacKinnon</a>, Makar, and the rest of the team.

<h2>Landeskog is joining the road trip</h2>



If the mood inside the locker room wasn’t exciting enough, head coach Jared Bednar added to the buzz by announcing that the captain will be making the trip across the Canadian border as well.



With the Avalanche set to take on the Maple Leafs, Senators, and Canadiens, Landeskog will take part during the morning skates on the road, enroute to a full recovery, hopefully in time for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

“[Landeskog’s] looking good, I think he looked great in practice today. Obviously, just sort of the flow and go, non-contact stuff, certainly nice to have him out there, and so he’s making strides,” Jared Bednar stated during media availability after the Avalanche’s practice on Monday. “Obviously, this rehab is not lineal, it’s lots of peaks and valleys in it, sometimes it’s two steps forward, and one step back, but he’s still making progress.

It’s really hard to say, but things are going great and is certainly nice to have him back on the ice with our team. His season began with a spectacular&nbsp;13-game point streak, and his dominance at home is undeniable, with an active&nbsp;20-game home point streak. Recently, MacKinnon reached a historic milestone, becoming the&nbsp;100th player in NHL history&nbsp;to record&nbsp;1,000 career points.

The Colorado Avalanche fell to the Minnesota Wild in a shootout, marking their first NHL loss since a February 23 defeat to the St. Louis Blues. <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/nathan-mackinnon">Nathan MacKinnon</a> knows the team can’t win them all, and after the streak ended in Minneapolis, he shared an honest and optimistic take.



The Avalanche have been on a tear recently, after big moves during the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> trade deadline, which didn’t affect the team’s morale, they now sit in third position in the Central Division, with a bigger margin ahead of the Wild who sit in the WC1 spot.



Although losing to a divisional opponent is always deflating, the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/colorado-avalanche">Avalanche</a> have some breathing room and the narrow defeat shouldn’t set off many alarms inside the organization.



That sentiment was made clear by one of the loudest voices in the locker room, as MacKinnon voiced a calm statement after the 2-1 shootout defeat to the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/minnesota-wild">Wild</a> at Xcel Energy Center.

“It’s a tough back-to-back,” Avalanche’s Nathan MacKinnon said postgame, as reported by NHL.com. “We got in at 4 (a.m.). It’s a grind but it was great to get a point, get a late goal there.”

<h2>Elite company</h2>



MacKinnon became the first player to surpass the 100-point mark in the 2024-25 NHL season after a two-point night against the Chicago Blackhawks. Most importantly, MacKinnon joined the elite 1,000 point club in the NHL. MacKinnon is now along the likes of Sidney Crosby, Connor McDavid, and Alex Ovechkin, as active players to reach the millenium of points.



However, ‘Nate Dogg’ didn’t look forward to rest in his laurels, instead focusing on the season ahead and the big expectations set for the Avalanche in the postseason.



“I think it’s cool. It’s fun to accomplish something with friends and teammates and stuff,” MacKinnon said, according to NHL.com. “I don’t know, it’s a number. It’s a cool milestone, for sure, and something to reflect on, I guess.“

“It’s just a different setup I think. I’m going to the net a little bit more with [Necas],” MacKinnon said about the power play setup with Necas, via NHL.com. “He was such a good half-wall player in Carolina. Obviously, I watched a lot of video on him when he came here, and he was so good on the half wall. So, I don’t want to hog it too much, and I think a little rotation is always pretty good. I think it confuses them a little bit.”

However, the NHL is a business, and friendships often take a backseat to championships in the list of priorities. Colorado believed Necas could give them the upper hand in a potential Stanley Cup Playoffs series, and so far, so good. That said, playoff hockey is a different monster, and the tables could easily turn in the post-blockbuster trade debate.

What a difference a few weeks can make in the NHL. After news broke of the blockbuster trade between the Carolina Hurricanes and <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/colorado-avalanche">Colorado Avalanche</a>, most fans believed the Canes had fleeced the Avs by acquiring star Mikko Rantanen. However, the Finnish star has struggled to find his rhythm since arriving in Raleigh, and Martin Necas may have added insult to injury with a bold statement about playing alongside Nathan MacKinnon and the star-studded roster in Denver.



Since being traded to the Hurricanes, Rantanen has appeared in eight games in Raleigh, registering only three points (one goal and two assists). Given his hefty salary and expiring contract at the end of the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> season, Carolina may already be considering moving on from Rantanen, despite acquiring him just a few weeks ago.



Whatever decision the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/carolina-hurricanes">Hurricanes</a> make on their new star, they will ensure it’s the best for their postseason hopes. However, spirits in Carolina aren’t too high, as the Canes have dropped their last two outings. Colorado is also on a two-game losing skid, but the sentiment around Martin Necas (acquired in the Rantanen trade) has been entirely different.



Necas has enjoyed his stay in Mile High so far, tallying nine points (4G, 5A) in ten games with the Avalanche. Recently, Necas made a notable admission about playing alongside <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/nathan-mackinnon">MacKinnon</a> and the other stars in Colorado—a message that subtly takes digs at Carolina.

<h2>Necas opens up on finding out about the trade</h2>



With little notice, Necas became a top teammate for MacKinnon, who registers 12 points (2G, 10A) since the former Hurricanes forward walked into the facility in Denver. 



“Nobody expected it, especially at that time of year; there weren’t a lot of trades really happening then,” Necas said. “When I saw it on social media that Carolina was acquiring Mikko Rantanen, I thought, ‘Oh boy, I’m probably coming here.&apos;”

MacKinnon, fresh off winning a gold medal with Team Canada at the 4 Nations Face-Off, expressed his gratitude for Necas, with whom he has already formed a strong partnership on the ice.

While MacKinnon made it clear he didn’t want Rantanen to leave, having played alongside the Finnish star since being drafted by Colorado, he’s appreciative of Necas’ immediate impact



“I think we have a similar style of game,” MacKinnon said about Necas, via NHL.com. “We both like to carry it off the rush, we’re both righties. I think we think both similar, so we can imagine where each other would be on the ice, so it’s a lot of fun. He’s a dynamic player, he’s amazing, and it’s been good so far.”

Canada’s run through the tournament included just one loss, a 3-1 defeat to the United States in the round robin. Cooper’s team quickly learned from their mistakes, and less than a week later, they showed all their talent to win in overtime in Boston.

“They did all the right things. For this group of players and the talent level they have, for them to do what they did away from the puck, that’s the Canadian way. <h2>Team Canada’s performance in the 4 Nations Face-Off</h2>



Team Canada’s performance had several highlights. First, Jon Cooper’s wisdom in starting much-criticized goaltender Jordan Binnington in the final. The St. Louis Blues standout made 31 key saves in the championship game to help Canada win the championship.

Although the race for the Stanley Cup Playoffs is red hot, all eyes in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> have now shifted to the inaugural Four Nations Face-Off. The prestigious tournament, set to replace the All-Star Game, has generated significant buzz as the league’s best players unite to represent their homeland. However, Team Canada head coach Jon Cooper has made a drastic decision regarding the Nova Scotian trio of Sidney Crosby, Brad Marchand, and Nathan MacKinnon.



The Maple Leaf side enters this four-team competition with high expectations—anything less than first place would be considered a failure for the Canadians. Not because their competitors offer little resistance—quite the opposite—but because Canada knows its roster is star-studded. As they prepare to face Finland, Sweden, and the USA, ‘The True North’ hopes to reign supreme.



<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/sidney-crosby">Crosby</a> will wear the ‘C’ on his sweater and lead the talented roster as they prepare to make their debut on February 12 against Sweden at Bell Centre in Montreal. The team held its first practice on Monday morning, and some shocking decisions by head coach Jon Cooper came to light as the players hit the ice.



Crosby will center the second line, as the top spot belongs to none other than Connor McDavid. That wasn’t much of a shock, though, as Canada boasts a 1A-1B duo with Crosby and McDavid. However, what was truly surprising was Cooper’s decision regarding the Nova Scotian best friends—Crosby, MacKinnon, and <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/brad-marchand">Marchand</a>.

Marchand was the odd man out of the Bluenose Province trio on Canada’s second line. <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/nathan-mackinnon">MacKinnon</a> will play on Crosby’s right wing, but Marchand won’t be on the opposite side. Instead, the Boston Bruins’ captain will line up at right wing on the third line.

<h2>So close to a dream come true</h2>



Since the NHL announced their international tournament, much talk has surrounded a possible reunion between the three Nova Scotian legends in a line. However, it seems that won’t become a reality, at least for the opening game of the competition.



All hope is not lost, nevertheless. If the circumstances require it, Cooper may shuffle the lineup, and Marchand could join Sid and Nate, fulfilling his personal yearning.
