<p>Schaefer spent much of the preseason paired with veteran <strong>Scott Mayfield</strong>, learning the nuances of the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> game and adapting his impressive skating and puck-moving skills to the Islanders’ system.</p>

<h2>Schaefer’s journey to the NHL</h2>



<p>Last season, Schaefer played 17 games for the <strong>Erie Otters</strong> in the OHL, recording 22 points (7 goals, 15 assists) after his injury. He previously played 56 games the season before, registering 17 points (3 goals, 14 assists).</p>

<p>Duclair, who turned 30 on August 26, had suffered a severe groin injury last October that took longer to heal than anticipated. Before the injury, he had scored two goals in five games, but in the subsequent 39 games, he recorded just five goals and four assists. Roy’s frustration stemmed from what he perceived as a lack of effort on the ice, though the winger emphasized his limited physical capacity during that stretch.</p>

<p>With a four-year, $14 million contract secured as a free agent, <strong>Duclair</strong> is now fully focused on returning to peak condition for the regular season. <em>“My focus is Game 1 of the regular season and being ready for that,”</em> he said. <em>“Going to take all the time that’s needed during training camp, preseason, whatever it is.”</em></p>



<p>Roy indicated that Duclair will begin the season on the third line alongside <strong>Jean-Gabriel Pageau</strong> and <strong>Simon Holmstrom</strong>, hoping that the winger can regain the form that earned him 24 goals in 2023-24. <em>“I want him to be who he was before he got hurt,”</em> Roy said.</p>

<p>The <strong><a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/new-york-islanders">New York Islanders</a> </strong>surprised no one at the <strong>2025 NHL Draft </strong>when they used the first-overall pick to select standout defenseman <strong>Matthew Schaefer</strong>. The highly touted 17-year-old has long been considered a future NHL cornerstone, and the Islanders wasted no time making their intentions clear.</p>



<p>In his first in-depth comments since the draft, newly appointed general manager <strong>Mathieu Darche</strong> explained why trading the pick was never seriously considered. Though some rival teams reached out, Darche said the Islanders always knew who they were taking.</p>



<p>“<em>There was never an actual offer,”</em> Darche told NHL insider <em>Jeff Marek</em>. <em>“A few teams just asked, ‘Hey, what are your plans?’ and I told them straight, I’m picking.”</em></p>



<h2>Why were the Islanders so certain about Matthew Schaefer?</h2>

<p>“<em>So I wasn’t moving the pick</em>,” he said. <em>“I didn’t know the player as well as our scouts. But they were all-in on him.”</em> Darche credited Morrow for laying the groundwork, and after watching more game tape and meeting Schaefer himself, he agreed completely:<em> “It was a clear cut. He was going to be our guy.”</em></p>
