After months of back and forth, Daryl Morey finally admitted defeat. The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/philadelphia-76ers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Philadelphia 76ers</a> GM had no choice but to trade <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/james-harden" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">James Harden </a>away, and while it took him way more than it should’ve, it finally got done.



Harden was traded alongside P.J. Tucker and Filip Petrusev to the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/los-angeles-clippers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Los Angeles Clippers</a> in exchange for Robert Covington, Marcus Morris Sr., KJ Martin, Nic Batum, a 2028 unprotected first-round pick, two second-round picks, a 2029 pick swap, and an additional first-round pick that will go to a third team, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.



While none of the players and assets involved in the deal should move the needle, this trade will have enormous implications for both teams involved and the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/nba" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">NBA</a> as a whole. With that in mind, we’ll break it down to try and explain what’s going to change for everybody.



<h2>The Clippers Get A Star, Save Money</h2>



At first glance, the Los Angeles Clippers went from a very good team to a championship contender. They already had two elite talents on their roster, such as Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, but their injury woes raised skepticism.

Now, they have an elite plan B with Harden next to Russell Westbrook. Worst case scenario, they’ll still have two former All-Stars, depth, and a great coach weathering the storm. But if they manage to stay healthy, it’s hard to envision any team taking them down in a seven-game series.



Harden is also on an expiring deal, and with the contracts they’re getting in return, they could save up to $60 million in the offseason. That will allow them to either re-sign him if things go well or pursue another star in free agency. 



<h2>The Sixers Move On</h2>



The Philadelphia 76ers may have won by subtraction. Harden didn’t want to be there, and all the drama and distractions weren’t doing this team any favors. They needed to move on from him months ago, and they could’ve even landed a better return.



Through the first three games of the season, they’ve already seen what Tyrese Maxey could give them as the primary ball-handler and secondary scorer next to Joel Embiid. He’s been stellar as a scorer, and his ability to push the break has helped them dominate in transition.

Embiid needs more stability, especially with all the rumors about his future and whether he wants to leave or not. The Sixers have a flurry of solid role players that can help him pick up the slack, and they can now focus solely on basketball.



<h2>This Is Harden’s Last Chance</h2>



The NBA world will set all eyes on Harden and the Clippers. He’s been granted a trade for the third time in his last four years, and he won’t get another opportunity to handpick his next destination — outside of free agency, obviously.



There was a lot of chatter about how NBA teams were no longer interested in his services. He’s not getting any younger, and while everybody knows what he’s capable of as a scorer and playmaker, his history of insubordination, plus his questionable off-court habits, could drive multiple teams away.

The Beard opted into a player option in the offseason, but his intention was to sign a supermax extension. Things got ugly when the front office didn’t meet that expectation.



Harden has therefore made his priority to find a new team, but the Sixers have yet to move him. The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/los-angeles-clippers">Los Angeles Clippers</a> have been linked with the veteran guard for months, as they’re reportedly his preferred landing spot.



Philadelphia’s demands kept LA at bay, and it doesn’t look like that will change anytime soon. According to NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, the Clippers have decided not to trade for Harden in the near future.



“I’m told that is when the start of the season now, at least for the foreseeable future, the Clippers are stepping back from these trade talks about James Harden. They’re essentially pausing them,“ Woj said, via SixersWire. “They have talked with Philadelphia for months about a trade. They’ve made their best offer for Harden and they are now going to start their season and see what this team looks like with a healthy Kawhi Leonard, a healthy Paul George.“



Woj added that the Los Angeles-based franchised may re-engage in trade talks for the 34-year-old, but they’re not losing sleep over it. After all, the Clippers know there are not other suitors out there. That gives them leverage, especially if the season goes on and Harden is still stuck in the City of Brotherly Love.

Following a 10-day absence from the team to take care of a personal matter, Harden returned to practice on Wednesday. However, Nick Nurse said he won’t take part in the Sixers’ opening game of the season agains the Bucks on Thursday night.

According to Chris Haynes of Bleacher Report, Harden wanted to travel with the team anyway, but a security official denied him entry onto their plane. The Harden saga seems to bring all kinds of news every day except that he finally got traded, which makes one wonder where this situation will ultimately lead. The former MVP still belongs to the 76ers and has reported to training camp this summer.

Before being snubbed last season, Harden was part of the All-Star weekend for 10 straight years between 2013 and 2022. But since then, he looked like a shell of himself. The Sixers missed Harden’s best version in the postseason, and despite his trade request, not many teams seemed to pick up the phone to get him.

<h2>What’s next for James Harden?</h2>



Harden made it abundantly clear he desires to play elsewhere. Apart from letting the Sixers front office know about his intention, the veteran guard made his stance public by calling President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey a “liar” in the summer.

On Wednesday, Harden returned to the Philadelphia 76ers’ facilities for practice, just one day before the team starts the 2023-24 NBA season in Milwaukee. 76ers head coach Nick Nurse later addressed this situation with the media:



“He was in some of the stuff early. Obviously, we’re doing a lot of game prep stuff so he didn’t take part in much of that. It was a pretty short practice at that. So, he was in practice at the start, and he was there at the end, but we had to get ready for our game with the guys that are going to be playing.”



Nurse added that, despite Harden is already back with the team, he will not travel for the road game against the Bucks. The Sixers coach explained that since The Beard was out for 10 days, he’s in “ramp-up” phase once again.

No one knows what was said in those meetings between him and Morey. Ironically, Morey was the one who signed him to most of his multi-million contract deals and the one who trusted him every step of the way, even up to this day in Philadelphia.

Martin criticized Harden for even thinking he was worthy of a max contract after the way he’s played lately. He believes the former MVP is undeserving of a top-tier contract at this point in his career:



“If I’m James Harden, I can’t expect them people to give me another five years for 250 million dollars, dog!” Martin said on Gil’s Arena. “Could give a f–k what he promise me sitting at the dinner table. If I’m being honest, he tell me that sh-t, I’m leaving that meeting thinkin’ he’s a f–kin’ liar.”



Martin also mocked Harden for the way he’s played for his past three teams. They have no silverware to show for after his stops there, and it’s not like he left any of those places on great terms:



“If I’m being honest with myself in this situation, everything that I’ve put on the table? The last three stops? Everything that I’ve put on the table, why would somebody sign me up for another five [years] for the maximum amount of money they could possibly give me? We’re naive,” Martin continued.

<h2>Harden Can Still Play</h2>

His defense has never been his cover letter, but he’s improved significantly in the post, and even if he won’t put up 50 points anymore, he’s still a threat from all three levels and demands defensive attention.

Though he’s still showing up to the team’s facilities, the 34-year-old told Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer that his relationship with the front office is beyond repair. “No. When you—and this is not about this situation. “They’ve offered Philly more than anybody else has — a first-round pick, a pick swap, expiring contracts,” Wojnarowski reported. “For the Clippers right now, it’s we’re not trying to offer you more, we’re not giving you that 2030 first-round pick, but let’s see what we can turn that 2028 pick, see if we can flip it and then see if there’s something that more interests Daryl Morey.”



Despite their personal differences, Daryl Morey has always had a high regard for Harden, especially as an asset. And he’s usually held onto his players for as long as it takes before making a deal; he won’t take a penny on the dollar.



Likewise, the Clippers are doing the right thing by not rushing and throwing the sink at them to get Harden. As good as he is, he’ll be a free agent at the end of the season.

Harden is no longer the perennial MVP candidate he used to be. Granted that he’s coming off leading the league in assists per game and can still put up 20 and 10 on any given night, but he has to be quite careful about the next move he makes in his career.
