The Indiana Fever is one of the most mediatic teams in the whole WNBA. Unfortunately, one of the franchise’s key players, Sophie Cunningham, suffered a heavy injury after an opposing player fell into her knee. Fever head coach, Stephanie White, expressed her concern during the press conference.
Per Tony East, a journalist who covers both the Fever and the NBA’s Indiana Pacers, White spoke about how she saw the injury occur. “I’m like – holy s—,” is what the Fever head coach said when Cunningham went down on the floor.
The injury happened as Bria Hartley from the Connecticut Sun tried to attack the rim, which prompted Cunningham to do a transition. Hartley then threw a pass and lost her balance, making her fall into Cunningham’s right knee. The Fever star immediately grabbed her leg and started hopping until finally falling down in massive pain.
Was there foul play?
Cunningham has quickly become one of the most popular players in the WNBA. However, she is polarizing. While some love her personality, she has rubbed the WNBA and some opposing players the wrong way. Many people on social media are saying that Hartley purposedly launched herself at Cunningham. Take a look and draw your own conclusions.
Even Cunningham’s sister called out the WNBA after the injury happened. Cunningham was also vocal criticizing some of the league’s officials and even said the referees help other team’s stars like Paige Bueckers.

Indiana can’t catch a break
Cunningham is now injured and it seems like it’s a serious injury. The Fever’s biggest star, Caitlin Clark, has also missed quite some time. She hasn’t played since July 15 after sustaining a right groin injury.
This year, Clark has sat out 22 regular season games now. White has said Clark is making progress but still can’t practice fully. Now Cunningham joins the injury list. The Fever will have to do without two of the best players on the roster.
