Dawn Staley and the South Carolina Gamecocks may have lost much more than just one game. They were so close to repeating as national champions, and they’ve now also lost one of their best defenders.
Staley’s team crushed past Tennessee Tech, Indiana, Maryland, Duke, and Texas, but they couldn’t keep the momentum rolling against Paige Bueckers and the UConn Huskies.
Notably, that heartbreaking loss also marked the end of MiLaysia Fulwiley’s days with the program. She entered the transfer portal after two years, and she wrote a heartfelt letter to bid farewell.
MiLaysia Fulwiley sends emotional message
“I want to begin by thanking my hometown of Columbia, South Carolina,” Fulwiley said. “Without my village,I wouldn’t be where I am today, chasing my dreams. Thank you to Coach Staley, and my teammates for the unforgettable memories we’ve created together. Most importantly, thank you to the FAMS for embracing me and supporting me over the past two years. After thoughtful consideration, I’ve decided to enter the transfer portal. I’m excited for what’s next and grateful for all the continued love and support.“
Fulwiley posted nine points, four assists, and two boards in her final game with the program, and he averaged 11.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game over the season.
South Carolina will most definitely miss her defensive prowess. She averaged 1.5 steals per game, and it will be interesting to see where she takes her talents next season.
