Carlos Mendoza has been watching the New York Mets suffer lately through a string of bad games, until a recent outing by Nolan McLean helped the team snap a losing streak and win their third game of the month. The manager had some positive comments on the performance.
According to Mendoza’s recent statements, not only did McLean have an incredible outing against the Mariners, but that type of performance is what really helps the Mets—not just to win games, but also to lift the team’s energy.
“We needed that as a team, the organization,” Mendoza said about McLean. “…given where we’re at and how hard it’s been for us.” He also revealed that he feels good about the team’s chances for the postseason.
A Truly Good First Game for McLean
Carlos Mendoza obviously appreciated the effort from Nolan McLean in his professional debut on the mound. His stat line of 5.1 innings pitched with just two hits and four walks is a very good start for a young pitcher who could offer a lot more to the Mets in the next two to three weeks.
McLean pitched like an experienced player in his debut, seeming like an MLB veteran. Mendoza noted, “The situation didn’t seem too big for him,” after the win that served to at least lift the team’s spirits. McLean himself said of his debut, “I couldn’t have dreamed it up any better.”
Next Pitcher for the Mets
Of course, McLean will need to rest, and the Mets will now have to rely on Clay Holmes for the third game against the Mariners. A win would give them a series victory, something they haven’t achieved since July. Holmes’ last time on the mound was in a 13-5 win against the Braves, but he did not get the decision.
