New York Yankees fans could see Paul Goldschmidt return, as the veteran slugger recently acknowledged that he would be interested in coming back for another season with the team. Goldschmidt hit .274 last season with the Yankees, though he understands that a return would likely not be in the same role or position.
“Paul Goldschmidt is interested in returning to the Yankees, even if it’s not in an everyday role, according to Jon Heyman,” a report that circulated widely on X following Heyman’s article for the New York Post, which revealed Goldschmidt’s interest.
It’s worth noting that the Yankees paid Goldschmidt a total of $12.5 million for one MLB season last year. While it was a sizable one-year investment, he appeared in most of the team’s games.
Would it be a good idea for the Yankees to give Goldschmidt another chance?
Last season was one of Goldschmidt’s worst in terms of strikeouts, as he reached the 100-strikeout mark for the third time in his career. That stood out statistically, even though he still posted a solid batting average. His run production, however, fell short, with just 45 RBIs, the third-lowest total of his career, along with 10 home runs, also his third-worst mark.
It remains unclear when, or if, the Yankees could make another offer to Goldschmidt, but it almost certainly would not be for the same amount he earned last season. Still, if used primarily as a designated hitter, Goldschmidt could help take some of the workload off Aaron Judge without significantly interfering with Jasson Domínguez’s situation.
“Jasson Domínguez played 123 games last year in this same offense that also had Paul Goldschmidt playing in 146. There would be plenty of plate appearance opportunities for JD on this team, especially with a DH who would be lucky to play 100 games. I think it’s likely he’s back, and that’s a good thing,” Jack Fungo (@fungomedia) wrote on X.
