Mets head coach Carlos Mendoza reveals setback for Juan Soto’s teammate

Juan Soto is off to a slow start this season. With only three home runs through 28 games, New York Mets fans have started to raise concerns about the star outfielder’s performance, even as the team holds a strong 19-9 record.

While Soto’s struggles dominate conversations, fans are also keeping a close eye on the pitching rotation. Although the Mets have found some stability with arms like Griffin Canning, Tyler Megill, and Jose Butto, they now face a new challenge after a key injury hit their staff.

Ahead of the series finale against the Nationals in Washington, manager Carlos Mendoza confirmed that reliever AJ Minter suffered a lat injury. The team has yet to determine how long Minter will be sidelined, as doctors continue to evaluate the severity of the issue.

“The one thing we know now is that he has a lat injury. That was confirmed. Now we are waiting for the doctors to examine him and determine the amount of time he will be out of the roster,” Mendoza told reporters regarding Minter’s status.

Minter’s impact early in the 2025 season

Through the first 13 games under manager Mendoza, Minter has posted strong numbers, including one game finished, 14 strikeouts, and just two earned runs allowed. The left-hander has given up only six hits across 11.0 innings pitched during the 2025 MLB regular season, showcasing his reliability out of the bullpen.

In his first year with the Mets, Minter is already flashing the form that made him a standout with the Atlanta Braves. Over eight seasons in Atlanta, he compiled a 3.28 ERA and racked up 422 strikeouts, solidifying his reputation as one of the league’s most effective relievers.

Mendoza comments on struggles of another Soto’s teammate

While Minter has impressed, not every Mets veteran has gotten off to a fast start. Outfielder Brandon Nimmo has struggled to make a major impact early in the 2025 campaign, prompting manager Carlos Mendoza to address his performance.

“He’s not getting the results, but he’s hitting the ball hard,” Mendoza told reporters. “He could also be a stronger leader in the clubhouse. I’m proud of what he’s accomplished since reaching the MLB, and I’m confident he’ll work through this rough stretch.”
