You know how people always say that you should bet on yourself? Well, that’s 100% right about 99% of the time. But if you’re anNBA player and theLos Angeles Lakers offer you a 4-year, $84 million contract despite not averaging even 20 points per game, then you shouldn’t test your luck.

That’s what happened to Dennis Schroder. The German point guard rolled the dice and cost himself tens of millions of dollars after turning down not one but two offers from the Lakers last season.

Schroder was a no-show in the playoffs, the Lakers traded for Russell Westbrook, and all the point guard-needy teams got a better (and in some cases cheaper) alternative. So, he had no choice but to settle for a one-year, $5.9 million deal with the Boston Celtics.

Gilbert Arenas Says Schroder’s Contract Fiasco Will Eat Him Up

Needless to say, everybody around the league has had something to say about this epic blunder. Even former All-Star Gilbert Arenas couldn’t help to chime in and give his thoughts on Instagram:

“This (will) eat him up unless he can make the money back in the same time frame,” Arenas wrote on an Instagram post. “He had a 84 million for 4 year deal which means by the summer of 2025 he would have made 84 million starting at around 19 million the first year so year 1 this season coming up he’s minus (13 million) for the up coming season. So to get back on track he will have to sign a deal next summer that starts at like 32 million just to have made the same amount for those two years. So no matter what he signs if it doesn’t equal up to 84 million by the end of the 2024-25 season it will eat him up.”

Schroder made a risky move and it didn’t pay off. He’s still loaded with cash and will play for a good team but he was just too full of himself and the market gave him a tough reality blow. Hopefully, he’ll ball his heart out in Boston this season and earn a big contract afterward.
