If there’s one team that truly made the most of the latest NFL draft, it’s undoubtedly the Jacksonville Jaguars. The acquisition of the versatile Travis Hunter gives them options not only on offense but also on defense. However, Trevor Lawrence prefers to have him as a key weapon starting Week 1.
The former Colorado Buffalo made a name for himself in college football by excelling both as a wide receiver and a cornerback. Among his greatest strengths, his elite speed stood out — catching the attention of teammates, coaches, and outsiders alike. This raw talent is seen as a true diamond in the rough.
During a recent appearance on Pardon My Take with Big Cat and PFT Commenter, the Jaguars QB spoke about his early work with Hunter, revealing that his new teammate’s speed is something he’s rarely seen in his career.
“He’s unbelievable as far as like the condition and shape he’s in,” the former Clemson signal-caller said. “I mean, he can run all day.”
If Hunter makes a mistake, he just gets back up and tries again: “No one does that,” Lawrence said. “It’s not shade on anybody else, but it’s like no one trying to (run) 50-yard full speed again when they just did it.”
More than just physical ability
There’s no doubt that one of the main qualities that made Travis Hunter a top target for several NFL franchises was his athleticism and on-field talent. However, Trevor Lawrence knows his new teammate also brings a winning mentality — one that sets him apart just as much as his physical gifts.
“I said that. So (Hunter’s) first day over at DB, I was like, ‘we’re throwing every ball at you,'” the QB stated. “That first day, I was like, ‘I’m throwing every ball at you … so you come back to offense.”
“He’s a super hard worker … you can tell he doesn’t have a lot of issues going on and stuff where it’s like he’s distracted. He just seems very focused.”
What position will Hunter play?
Since his arrival to the league, much has been speculated about which position Liam Coen would use to get the most out of Hunter starting in Week 1. While there’s been no official confirmation from the head coach, it’s believed that Hunter will be used on both sides of the field — with a greater emphasis on the offensive side of the ball.
