Aaron Glenn has taken on the important role of leading the New York Jets, and has slowly started to clarify his short-term goals. While many dream of a Super Bowl run, the former Lions defensive coordinator shared different intentions for the upcoming NFL season.
In a recent conversation with the media, Glenn addressed the possibility of building a strong work culture and taking small but steady steps in the league to eventually position the team for a shot at the final game of the season.
“To me, it’s a process, and I’ve talked to our staff about this,” Glenn said last week, via the New York Post. “I’m not here to talk about the playoffs. I’m not here to talk about the Super Bowl when the players first get in. To me, it’s the process of actually making it that point. The two things I want to make sure we do first and foremost is establish the culture that we’ve been talking about and try to create a building environment.”
In addition, Glenn spoke about the possibility of forging a strong culture within the building, one that will inevitably lead to significant results for the Jets in the short term.
“Culture’s about people,” Glenn said. “As we continue to get the right people in the building, the culture’s going to change. That’s something I learned a long time ago. Me sitting up there giving a rah-rah speech that has nothing to do with culture. Culture is about the people that we bring in the building. I’m not just talking about players. I’m talking about coaches, too. I’m talking about support staff, too. We’re trying to do a really good job of bringing the right people in the building and as we do that the culture will eventually change.”
The priority of taking it one step at a time
Aaron Glenn knows he faces the tough task of improving on the results from last season, which was quite turbulent after the departure of Robert Saleh and even more so following the loss of quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
With the certainty of having Justin Fields as the leader on the field, along with a strong roster and an exciting draft ahead, Glenn made it clear that they will take it step by step in the upcoming NFL season, without skipping any stages.
“Understand what Phase One [of the offseason program] is really about,” Glenn said. “We’re trying to get bigger, faster, stronger, more explosive. That’s the only thing I want the players worrying about at that point. We have a lot of time for scheme. We have a lot of time to talk about Super Bowls and playoffs, but right now building a culture and building an environment in that building is the most important thing right now to me.”
What should the Jets aspire to in the upcoming season?
Improving on last season’s performance may not be too difficult to achieve, at least statistically. However, the new head stated that he won’t skip any steps, and will first instill the necessary fundamentals to build a solid foundation.
Betting on Justin Fields, with the goal of retaining Sauce Gardner and Garrett Wilson, the Jets aim to be competitive, starting with the AFC East, and then making a deep run in the upcoming season.
