The Los Angeles Chargers don’t have what you would call the deepest and best receiving corp in the NFL. As practice sessions get close, Justin Herbert might not count with one of his weapons, at least until the contract situation is solved.
We’re talking about newly-drafted Tre Harris. He is one of 30 second round picks that haven’t signed their contracts yet. Before 2025, no second rounders had received fully guaranteed rookie contracts. However, wide receiver Jayden Higgins and linebacker Carson Schwesinger (the first two second-round picks) received them. This has created quite a mess.
None of the 30 other players picked in the second round have signed, and this can create issues to start training camps. This holdout is not at all voluntary. In fact, the rookies all worked out in the offseason program, under participation agreements. However, they, as a whole, won’t be present in training camps without signed contracts.
Harris is a much-needed weapon for Herbert
A couple of years ago, the Chargers had one of the best receiving rooms in the NFL. Now, not so much. Don’t get it twisted, they do have a certified weapon in Ladd McConkey. However, it’s a slim skill position on the depth chart.
Tre Harris was drafted to be the guy to step up as Herbert’s second progression. Yes, the Chargers have Quentin Johnston, but his career has been marked by drops and underwhelming performances. The team also have Mike Williams, which is a good receiver, but he is a veteran and the injuries always harm him. In few and simpler words, Herbert needs Harris.
What are Harris’ strengths?
Back on his Ole Miss days, Harris ranked 7th in the wide receiver prospect list. He used to play mainly on the outside. Harris stands at 6-feet-2-inches tall and 205 lbs. He can do great on 50/50 balls as he had a 38.5 vertical jump.
According to NFL Draft Buzz, Harris is especially great at intermediate routes and deep threat passes. He knows how to reach the catch point and that is because of excellent field awareness. The Chargers need to solve Harris’ situation so he can get snaps with Herbert as soon as possible. If they develop chemistry, Herbert could create a lot of harm by targeting Harris.
