Three years after being drafted out of LSU with the fourth overall pick, the Jacksonville Jaguars shockingly decided to release Leonard Fournette on Monday. Needless to say, plenty of NFL Teams did their due diligence on the star running back, including the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
All teams allowed Fournette to clear waivers as nobody wanted to absorb the final $4 million of his contract. There were various suitors from the AFC East, including the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots but neither reportedly made a formal offer to the Pro Bowler.
Now, it seems like the Buccaneers added yet another weapon for Tom Brady, as Adam Schefter and Tom Pelissero broke the news that Fournette agreedto signa deal with Bruce Arians’ team.
Leonard Fournette To Join Tom Brady And The Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The 25-year-old star running back has rushed for2,631 yards (4.0 yards per carry) and 17 touchdowns, adding 134 receptions for1,009 yards and a couple of scores over his three-year career in the NFL.
Now, he’ll be joininga team that also added Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski this offseason to reinforce an already impressive core of Chris Godwin, Mike Evans, O.J Howard, and Cameron Brate.
The Buccaneers also have Ronald Jones II and LeSean McCoy under contract so it’ll be interesting to see whether they’ll try to trade one of them, cut them, or just play it out andsee how it goes.
Bruce Arians’ team is one of the biggest candidates out of the NFC South but that’s arguably themost competitivedivision entering the 2020 NFL season, thus adding an All-Pro running back like Fournette clearly gives them a huge edge.
As for Tom Brady, he recently signed a fully-guaranteed 2-year deal to lead the new era for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The team is clearly willing to do whatever it takes to surround him by elite talent, which isa scary thought for the rest of the league.
