The Washington Commanders entered the offseason with high expectations following Jayden Daniels’ standout 2024 campaign, during which he led the franchise to the NFC Championship Game, their most successful season in the past 30 years.
With the 2023 Heisman winner now firmly established as QB1 and the leader of an explosive offense, the front office has focused on strengthening areas that can ensure his continued development and long-term performance. Daniels showcased an impressive ability to create plays both through the air and on the ground during his rookie year, making his potential weapons even more critical.
Despite the momentum built last season, this is now a time for firm decisions. To avoid overloading their young quarterback, the Commanders have opted to bolster their backfield rotation, aiming to provide some relief and fresh options for head coach Dan Quinn and offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury. At the same time, one potential key weapon for Daniels is on his way out.
Which player is leaving the Commanders?
Washington announced the release of Michael Wiley, a 24-year-old running back who joined the team in 2024 as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Arizona. His departure comes alongside the arrival of veteran defensive reinforcements such as Von Miller, signaling the team’s commitment to building a deeper, more experienced roster.
Wiley played college football at Arizona from 2019 to 2023, putting up several solid seasons, including a 2022 campaign with 771 rushing yards and eight touchdowns. After signing as a UDFA in 2024, he spent part of the year on the practice squad and later signed a reserve/futures contract with Washington in February 2025.
Wiley’s release opens the door for more established profiles to step in behind Jeremy McNichols and Austin Ekeler, backs better aligned with Quinn and Kingsbury’s system. For Daniels, this means the coaching staff can now rely on a more stable and proven backfield, enhancing protection for the young quarterback.
