Plenty of speculation surrounded the Minnesota Vikings‘ starting quarterback situation heading into the upcoming NFL season, but head coach Kevin O’Connell has reportedly named J.J. McCarthy as the Week 1 starter. The young signal-caller has had limited opportunities to showcase his talent since entering the league due to a significant injury, but now he’s set for an early shot at redemption.
Rumors had been swirling about a potential Aaron Rodgers move to the NFC North—specifically, donning the purple and gold of the Vikings. But as the days went by, that possibility seemed to drift further from reality. As a result, head coach O’Connell doubled down on his confidence in the former Michigan Wolverine once again.
The reasoning behind this decision traces back to the strong first impressions McCarthy made upon arriving at the franchise—expectations were sky-high even before a season-ending injury derailed his debut. Now, with a clean bill of health, the talented QB will finally have the opportunity to showcase his full potential on the field.
“It started showing up more and more,” O’Connell told the press. “And that’s always a real positive from my perspective, when you can really start stacking coaching points on to things that he’s showing improvement on or ownership of. His overall understanding of our offense, the comfort level, even in the reps, whether it was versus the No. 1 defense or in competitive situations in practice, you were starting to see him play faster but under control while still maintaining the principles that we’re coaching.”
All eyes on J.J.: Vikings put their faith in McCarthy as Week 1 starter
Not only is head coach Kevin O’Connell optimistic about what J.J. McCarthy can bring to the table in his debut season with the Vikings—several of his teammates are also rallying behind the rookie quarterback. Aaron Jones, one of Minnesota’s key running backs, made a strong statement about his QB.
“J.J.’s a winner,” Jones said, via Pro Football Talk. “If you look from high school through his time in college, he’s lost one career game. He came in [and] in his short time there, he was balling.
“The preseason, he ended up getting hurt, unfortunately. But I think it might’ve been a quarterback battle if he didn’t get hurt. He’s different. He’s a competitor. He wants to be great and he’s hungry. So, I think you’ll see it when he steps on the field.”
What to expect from the Vikings in the 2025 NFL season
While the Vikings are in a transitional phase with McCarthy at the helm, the team’s core of skilled players on both sides of the ball, combined with O’Connell’s innovative coaching style, suggests a team that could compete in a wide-open NFC North.
The 2025 season is all about QB’s growth and how well the team can rally around him. A strong start could propel the Vikings into a good year, but any setbacks early on could leave them scrambling to find their identity. One thing is for sure—Minnesota’s future looks bright, and their success next season will largely depend on how quickly their new quarterback can adjust to the NFL spotlight.
