The Cleveland Browns allowed Dillon Gabriel to make his preseason debut against the Eagles. Unfortunately, amid his quarterback battle with Shedeur Sanders, he threw a pick-six that didn’t help his case at all.
Earlier this year, the Browns decided to draft two new quarterbacks. Initially, the AFC North club acquired Dillon Gabriel, but a few picks later, they also called Shedeur Sanders’ name.
For obvious reasons, all eyes are on the Browns, who now have to decide which rookie will earn a spot on their 53-man roster. Unfortunately for Gabriel, his debut was not as solid as Sanders’.
Dillon Gabriel throws a pick-six in Browns debut vs. Eagles
Dillon Gabriel, a former Oregon standout, joined the Browns with high expectations. Many thought he would serve as Joe Flacco’s backup this year, but Cleveland had other plans.
After selecting Gabriel, the Browns also acquired Shedeur Sanders in the 2025 NFL Draft. Now, both rookies are competing for a spot on the final 53-man roster, but their first statements have been very different.
While Shedeur Sanders threw two touchdowns in his debut, Dillon Gabriel didn’t have the same luck. In the Week 2 preseason duel against the Eagles, the rookie threw a pick-six that raised concerns among fans.
With a 6-0 lead in the second quarter, Gabriel attempted a pass to the left aimed at WR Diontae Johnson. The throw fell short, and Eagles’ second-round pick Andrew Mukuba intercepted it and returned it for a touchdown.
Following this unfortunate play, many Browns fans compared Gabriel’s debut to Sanders’, urging the team to make the right decision and stick with the former Buffaloes standout. It’s just a preseason game, but it’s certainly not how Gabriel envisioned his debut.
Is Shedeur Sanders going to play in the next preseason game?
Shedeur Sanders was expected to play against the Eagles on Saturday. Unfortunately, the quarterback suffered an oblique injury, and HC Kevin Stefanski decided not to risk him in that game.
According to reports, Sanders may play in the next preseason game against the Rams. However, it will depend on his recovery, as the team doesn’t want to rush him and risk a more serious issue.
