Although the New York Islanders‘ position in the standings isn’t what was expected, their recent win against the Nashville Predators gives them some breathing room, and a potential playoff berth is still viable, though challenging. Alexander Romanov had an outstanding performance, and none other than his head coach, Patrick Roy, made a statement about it.
After the 7-4 home victory, the Islanders remain in seventh place in the Metropolitan Division, keeping their playoff hopes alive. Once the game ended, the team’s head coach expressed satisfaction with his players’ performance, especially defenseman Romanov.
“It’s probably the best hockey I’ve seen him play,” Roy said to the press. “What I want to see from him is continuing to grasp the moment, to go up in the rush or to stay back. He’s been doing that pretty well for us. He doesn’t have to force plays, he needs to keep it simple and that’s where he plays his best hockey.”
According to Roy, it’s often challenging for defensive players to find the exact moment when they can contribute offensively. Despite this, he trusts that Romanov is gradually figuring it out.
“Sometimes defenseman are late bloomers and it takes a little more time because of the position,” Roy also added. “But right now he’s fun to watch. I love his intensity, how engaged he is.”
Romanov’s teammates also highlighted his contribution
It wasn’t just coach Roy who was pleased with the great performance of his defenseman Alexander Romanov. Several of his teammates also expressed their happiness with his performance, as he turned out to be a key piece in the Islanders’ victory.
“He’s been great, he’s playing with a lot of confidence,” Noah Dobson said. “He’s always had a great shot he’s just finding areas to use it more and he’s been finding ways to capitalize. It’s great to see him score some big goals for us.”
Tony DeAngelo, another member of the New York team, expressed being impressed by his teammate’s composure with the puck: “I didn’t know much about his game before I got a rep. I’m super impressed with him, he’s calm with the puck, he can break it out. He defends really well and he’s good in the o-zone. He’s been a big help for me.”
