Auston Matthews remains the centerpiece of the Toronto Maple Leafs and is keeping a close eye on the possibility of losing more key pieces like John Tavares, a crucial player who must work out a contract extension to remain part of the team’s offense heading into the 2025–26 NHL season.
After a season that ended with a painful first-round elimination in seven games against the Florida Panthers, Toronto faces key decisions regarding its offensive lineup and salary cap. The Maple Leafs are determined to surround Matthews with high-level talent while trying to preserve what they can amid Mitch Marner’s imminent departure.
Tavares is close to hitting free agency. The 34-year-old veteran proved he still has elite value last season with 38 goals and 74 points, and if he doesn’t reach a new deal with Toronto, he would instantly become one of the most sought-after players on the market. In fact, one Western Conference team is already keeping an eye on his situation.
Which Western team wants Tavares?
In a recent episode of the 32 Thoughts podcast, NHL insider Elliott Friedman revealed that the Western Conference team showing interest in Tavares is the Anaheim Ducks. They would reportedly make a move for the veteran forward if he fails to reach a deal with the Maple Leafs.
Such a scenario would only be possible if talks between Tavares and Toronto fall through. The Leafs are aiming to finalize a new deal soon, one with moderate length and a salary below his previous cap hit. However, after a strong season, Tavares’ high asking price could prove difficult to negotiate around.
Talks moving forward
Even though the Ducks are closely monitoring Tavares’ situation, The Athletic’s insider Pierre LeBrun reported that the Maple Leafs and the veteran forward’s camp remain in contact and both sides are motivated to reach an agreement that would keep Tavares in Toronto.
