Auston Matthews has been in the spotlight in recent days after reports surfaced that his relationship with Mitch Marner, his offensive teammate, has cooled off. In that context, the Toronto Maple Leafs are paying attention to every detail and have made a final decision regarding the future of one of their stars ahead of the 2025–26 NHL season.

It’s not easy to maintain a team full of stars when success remains elusive for so long. Toronto is looking to rebuild after repeated failed attempts to win the Stanley Cup. They will continue to count on Matthews as a key figure in their pursuit of that goal, but questions now surround Marner’s future with the team.

Much has been said about the future of the 28-year-old forward, who is set to finish the contract he signed in 2019 and had been in talks with the Maple Leafs to explore the possibility of an extension. However, the situation is far from ideal, and with several teams closely monitoring the scene, Toronto has now cleared up the remaining uncertainty.

Maple Leafs’ final decision on Marner

According to NHL insider Andy Strickland, the Maple Leafs have reportedly made the final decision to stop pursuing a contract extension or trade for Marner and will not prevent him from leaving as a free agent. This move effectively ends any chance of getting something in return for the departure of one of their biggest stars.

Marner recorded 27 goals last season, contributing to a strong 102-point campaign during the 2024–25 NHL season. His talent and offensive firepower are now expected to benefit a different franchise. The stage is set as NHL free agency begins on July 1.
