The Toronto Maple Leafs checked off a major task by re-signing John Tavares to a four-year deal amid a dramatic NHL offseason. The organization is clearly pleased to keep Tavares alongside Auston Matthews and company—and so is Tavares himself. However, recent reports suggest the veteran could have earned more money had he chosen to sign elsewhere in the league.
The ‘Core Four’ hasn’t worked out as Leafs fans dreamed. At the end of the day, the Stanley Cup has yet to be hoisted again in Toronto. Still, the organization isn’t eager to dismantle the foundation of the roster. With Mitch Marner’s exit imminent, the ‘Core Four’ might not be gone, but rather modified instead.
Matthew Knies and John Tavares are staying put—with Toronto committing less than $13M in AAV for both. As has been the case for quite some time, the Maple Leafs have laid the groundwork but are missing the finishing touches. That’s what has seemingly held them back over the years.
Matthews, Tavares, and company are all determined to break through, but it’s still a work in progress. While Marner has had enough of the Toronto market, Tavares has put pen to paper on a four-year commitment. However, he might be getting cold feet after reports emerged indicating other teams were willing to foot even heftier bills.
Bigger fish in the sea
According to insider Jeff Marek on The Sheet, John Tavares probably could have signed for a two-year, $16M deal with the Anaheim Ducks. Marek also hinted the Utah Mammoth could’ve handed a similar offer had Tavares become an unrestricted free agent.
Testing the waters
With Marner having one feet past the exit door, the Maple Leafs might be looking to bring in another top talent in the NHL. There’s plenty of available options, though most of them have a question mark floating over their heads. On that note, an insider suggested the Leafs knocking on the Nashville Predators’ door.
The Athletic‘s insider James Mirtle hinted at Toronto’s next move. “Would it be worth checking in with Nashville on Steven Stamkos or Jonathan Marchessault?”

With the franchise in Music City desperate to fix its lineup after a disheartening campaign, it might be worth a shot for the Maple Leafs. Both Marchessault and Stamkos are Stanley Cup champions, who could provide great experience and talent to Matthews’ side.
