Edinson Cavani has had a rather turbulent couple of days, with more competition for playing time at Manchester United with the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo, not only that it seems he will have to give up his number 7 shirt to the Portuguese superstar as well. Aside from that, the second all-time leading scorer for Uruguay can add that he will now miss all of the team’s World Cup qualifiers in September.

Uruguay will have a tough three game stretch against Peru away and two home games against Bolivia and Ecuador. Uruguay is fourthin Conmebol qualification and have been rather unconvincing as of late. Head coach Óscar Tabárez is hoping his side can pull off yet another resurgence as has been custom in his over 15 years in charge of the national team.

Cavani fell victim to the covid-19 pandemic and British government rules around the pandemic which would require quarantine for anyone returning from red list countries. This resulted in Uruguay having to cancel Cavani’s call up for qualification in September, here are the details.

According to the British government anyone returning from travel from a red list country, which Uruguay is on, would require a 10-day quarantine in a government- approved hotel. What is most striking is that various players from Argentina such as Emiliano Martinez and Emiliano Buendia were released by their clubs and are set to miss a Premier League game. Brazil was forced to leave out nine players from their squad due to covid restrictions and quarantine upon return for their players.

The Premier League announced last week that the clubs would not release players for international matches that would take place in red list countries. Other leagues tried to follow suit but in the end many players were released for international duty.

For Uruguay it is a huge loss considering Luis Suárez will also miss all three games after coming down with a knee injury during La Liga action this past weekend.
