Even though it seemed like they were having a bright start to the season, Tottenham have fallen apart over the last few weeks and they find themselves in a worryingspot with six rounds into the 2021-22 Premier League.
It’s not been an easy summer for Spurs with all the Harry Kane to Manchester City saga while they were going throughanother transition of managers with the appointment ofNuno Espirito Santo. And nowthey are facingan early wake-up call.
However, that wouldn’t prevent them from thinking about the long term. While Tottenham must turn things around on the pitch fast, they may also prepare for thosecontracts that will expire next summer.
Tottenham reportedly eyepossible Hugo Lloris replacement valued at£15 million
There’s still a long way to go thisseason but clubs usually get ahead of themselves when it comes to players’ contracts. And Spurs might begin to prepare for life without Hugo Lloris as his deal runs out in June 2022.
According to Football Insider, Tottenham see West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone as a potential candidate to be Lloris’ replacementshould the Frenchman doesn’t renew his deal orhis back-up until he calls it a time in North London.
Lloris, 34, isn’t getting any younger and after nearly a decade at the club Spursmight be lookingto be ready for a switch. The Manchester United academy product would bein consideration after making an impression at the Hawthorns.
Johnstone was valued at£15 million ($20m) this summer but no club was willing to satisfy The Baggies’ demands. West Ham were reportedly interested in him but a£11m ($14.7m) offer wasn’t enough to match West Brom’s expectations.
However, the England international – whoearned his first senior cap after an outstanding 2020-21 season – has also entered the final year of his contract. So, if Spurs decide he is capable of replacing Lloris, they could even land him for free.
