On Sunday, Jannik Sinner captured his first Wimbledon title after defeating Carlos Alcaraz in four sets. It was a major milestone for the Italian star and, as revealed by his coach, also an opportunity for him to learn from a player he watches closely.
“I would say that Jannik watches more Carlos matches than he does anybody else,” Darren Cahill said during a press conference on Sunday, as shared by Tennis.com. As for what motivates Sinner to study Alcaraz so carefully, the coach explained: “He’s fascinated with the improvements that are coming in his game.”
Cahill went on to describe how the Spanish star’s development pushes Sinner to elevate his own performance. “He’s pushing us as coaches to make sure that he’s improving also as a tennis player as well,” Darren added.
Sinner has held the World No. 1 ranking continuously since June 2024, while Alcaraz has remained close behind in the No. 2 or No. 3 spot, aiming to return to the top. That competitive drive clearly motivates both players — and Cahill didn’t shy away from acknowledging it: “The rivalry is real. It’s there. And hopefully it’s going to be there and real for the next 10 or 12 years.”
Sinner ends losing streak against Alcaraz
Before Sunday’s Wimbledon final, Alcaraz had beaten Sinner in five straight matches and extended his head-to-head lead to 8–4. The most recent of those wins came just a month ago, in the French Open final. “We didn’t speak about Roland Garros within 24 hours after the match,” Cahill revealed.
That silence wasn’t due to frustration, though — quite the opposite. “The way he played, the attitude that he had on court, the effort that he gave, it was faultless, and he was just beaten by a better player in the end,” the coach said. “We could not have been more proud of the way he played across in Paris.”
With the grass-court season approaching, Sinner quickly shifted focus to the next challenge. “For us it was important to move forward as quickly as possible. The leading week to Wimbledon, The Championships, was the best practice week we’ve ever had with him as far as attitude, as far as form,” Cahill concluded.
What’s next for Sinner and Alcaraz?
After lifting the Wimbledon trophy, Jannik Sinner’s next challenge will come in two weeks at the Canada Masters 1000, which this year will be held in Toronto. The tournament runs from July 27 to August 7 and will also feature Carlos Alcaraz — setting up the possibility for another high-stakes clash between the two stars.
