LAFC finished the 2020 season in seventh place of the Western Conference with 32 points in 22 games. Thus, they qualified for the 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs, only to lose to Seattle Sounders FC 3-1 in the First round. The Los Angeles side are yet to win an MLS Cup trophy in their history.

Columbus Crew ended last season in third place of the Eastern Conference table with 41 points in 23 fixtures. They progressed to the 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs, where they passed through New York Red Bulls, Nashville, New England Revolution, and Seattle Sounders to lift the trophy. It was the Crew's second MLS title.

The Sounders were second in the 2020 MLS Eastern Conference table with 39 points in 22 matches. They were tied with leaders Sporting Kansas City, and third-placed Portland Timbers, but Seattle had a worse head-to-head record with SKC and a better one against the Timbers. Seattle Sounders eventually lost in the MLS Cup Final clash against Columbus Crew at the Playoffs. They can also boast of winning the title twice.

It was Toronto FC who finished second behind Philadelphia Union at the MLS Eastern Conference table in 2020, with 44 points in a total of 23 games. The Reds eventually were defeated early by Nashville after extra time in the First round. Toronto have become the MLS champion once so far, in the 2017 season.
