The twilight of a boxing era may be approaching. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, the Mexican fighter who has dominated multiple divisions and left an indelible mark on the sport, is starting to seriously consider retirement. At 34 years old, the legend from Guadalajara recognizes that his time in the ring is limited, and the window for retirement is fast closing.
Since last year, Alvarez has hinted at the possibility of hanging up his gloves, and this time, it seems there’s a clearer timeline for his departure from professional boxing. His recent contractual agreement with Riyadh Season, which commits him to major fights for the next two years, represents a critical period that could lead to his retirement.
However, after fulfilling his commitments with Turki Alalshikh, it seems that the Mexican boxer may be ready to bring an end to his illustrious career. Canelo’s own recent remarks suggest that his retirement may be drawing near, generating both anticipation and nostalgia among his fans.
Canelo reflects on his legacy
In an interview with TMZ, Canelo once again addressed his potential retirement, words that have resonated deeply with his loyal fanbase. “I’ve fought everybody; I’ve fought the best. I’ve won many titles in different weight classes,” said Canelo. “I’ve been the pound-for-pound king, fighter of the year; in everything. If we talk about money, it’s never enough. But it’s not just about money. It’s about enjoying everything,” added Alvarez.

Canelo’s retirement plans
“I still enjoy boxing. That’s why I’m here. But if we talk about money, it’s never enough. But I don’t think about making a specific amount of money and then retiring; no. I’m going to do my thing, and then, at 37 or 38 years old, it’s time to retire,” Alvarez shared, hinting that his farewell could come between 2026 and 2027.

What’s next for Canelo?
According to various sources, Alvarez’s highly lucrative contract with Turki Alalshikh will see him earn approximately $400 million. His first fight under this agreement is set for May 3 against William Scull, where he will attempt to reclaim the IBF title and unify the 168-pound belts. If Canelo is victorious, his next challenge could be a long-anticipated showdown against Terence Crawford in September, possibly in Las Vegas.
