After seeing their three-peat dreams ruined by the Florida Gators in the Sweet 16 of the 2025 NCAA tournament, the UConn Huskies men’s basketball team is eager to bounce back and challenge for the national championship again.&nbsp;



With the defending champions Gators, the renewed Duke Blue Devils, the dangerous Kansas Jayhawks and more, Dan Hurley’s team won’t have the easiest path to another championship.&nbsp;



They have Alex Karaban returning for another season after withdrawing from the NBA draft, which is major for the team’s championship quest. UConn’s project has been built brick by brick, and that factor can make them favorites entering the 2025-26 season.&nbsp;

“The X factor for me for this group is on the defensive end of the floor,” Dawson said, via “The Field of 68.” “They got much better at the end of last season than they were at the start of last season. … I think that they will improve not having Sampson Johnson out there, he was a liability on the glass and was not the best on-ball defender we’ve ever seen.



“Allowing Tarris Reed to play more minutes will help them on that end of the floor. That’s my big question: what will this team be defensively? Because I think if you are a top 50-ish defense on KenPom, you can make the Final Four. If they’re a top-20 defense on KenPom, that’s a very different conversation that we’re having.”

The St. John’s Red Storm shone last season under Rick Pitino. The legendary coach took the team to the West Region second-round stage, where the Arkansas Razorbacks, led by Pitino’s nemesis, John Calipari, took them out 75-66.&nbsp;



Coming off a 31-5 (18-2 in the conference) record, the Red Storm have high expectations for the 2025-26 NCAA season. The team received big news when Bryce Hopkins transferred to the program after spending the last three seasons with the Providence Friars.&nbsp;



Hopkins is an intriguing prospect who also carries doubts after only playing three games last season. Before that, he played 14 games. Injuries have taken a toll on his body and derailed his progress, but if Pitino can bring the best out of him, Hopkins would be a menace.

Analyst John Fanta isn’t so sure about which version of Bryce Hopkins the St. John’s Red Storm will see this upcoming season. On Thursday’s episode of “Field of 68: Offseason Grades,” Fanta noted that Hopkins’ inactivity in the last two years could affect how he performs this season.

“We don’t know what version of Hopkins we’re going to see. We really do not,” Fanta said. “The guy hasn’t played coordinated basketball at a high level in two years.”



In three games last season, Hopkins averaged 17 points, 7.7 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.0 steals per outing, shooting 40% from the field, 40% from deep and 75% from the free-throw line.&nbsp; If he can return to his best version, the Red Storm would elevate its game from Day 1.

Despite all the losses they suffered in the offseason, the analyst is confident that Evans will have a solid campaign.

“Duke is obviously going to be the class of the league until they are not,” Rothstein said. “He put up big numbers late last season when Duke had injury issues. Isaiah Evans should be on every national breakout list.”&nbsp;



The 19-year-old guard played 36 games (started in three) during his freshman year, averaging 6.8 points and 1.1 rebounds per game, while shooting 43.2% from the field, 41.6% from deep, and 81.3% from the free-throw line.

The analyst ranked Syracuse No. 9 on his ACC power rankings ahead of the new season. While that might not be the highest ranking, Rothstein believes the Orange can only get better.&nbsp;



“Syracuse is number nine,” Rothstein said. “I’ve talked about how important it is for the ACC that Syracuse becomes nationally relevant again. They have not made the NCAA Tournament since 2021.”&nbsp;



The ACC has multiple talented and traditional teams, such as Duke, Clemson, North Carolina, Louisville and Notre Dame, among others. The job won’t be easy for Autry and Co., but Rothstein is confident this could be the start of a special time for the Orange.

“I think that this is a team that has the makeup to reach the program’s third Final Four in four years and frankly can win a national championship,” Fanta said. When you have the continuity factors, you also have the hunger factor of last year.”



More than that, Fanta said that the Gators struggled at times against the Huskies, and they wouldn’t want to face UConn again this <a href="http://bolavip.com/en/college-basketball" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">college basketball</a> season.&nbsp;



“UConn was giving Florida’s defense so many fits. And the Gators were really in a deep hole,” Fanta said. “They would tell you they might not win a national championship without that test from UConn to make them have a reality check.“



The Huskies are set to bounce back and let everybody know they aren’t done yet.&nbsp;

After two seasons watching others shine while he complemented his teammates, Alex Karaban will enter his senior season with high expectations. Karaban, a member of the back-to-back national champions UConn Huskies, elevated his game in the 2024-25 season, but the campaign didn’t end as he would have liked.&nbsp;



Dan Hurley’s team was shocked by the eventual national champions Florida Gators, in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Karaban became a top option for Hurley, which is promising ahead of the 2025-26 campaign. 



The forward carries high expectations, but he needs to fix a couple of things in his game to reach the next level.&nbsp;One analyst believes he goes just fine with the motions, but he tends to overthink when an apparent easy shot is right in front of him.



<h2>Analyst says Alex Karaban is “too smart” on the court&nbsp;</h2>



In Monday’s episode of the “Field of 68 After Dark” podcast, analyst Rob Dauster told John Fanta that Karaban thinks too much when he’s in front of a positive situation, calling his hesitation “a mess.”

“He’s too smart for his own good. Like he thinks too much,” Dauster said. “It was one of those things where when he was wide open and in a catch and shoot situation and he had an opportunity to like to think about what was about to happen, he was a mess.”



After posting 14.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.5 blocks per game last season, Karaban should take his game to the next level this campaign, as the Huskies have unfinished business.

While the Fighting Irish appeared to have the upper hand in the race to recruit Clark, she wasn’t sold on the project.



It was after a phone call with Lisa Bluder that Clark decided to commit to Iowa, where she became one of the best women’s college basketball players of all time.



She faced off against Auriemma’s Huskies several times, including a close 71-69 win over UConn during the 2023-24 season, Clark’s senior campaign. That Final Four win allowed the Hawkeyes to advance to the national championship, which they lost to the South Carolina Gamecocks.

“Well, there’s a lot of kids we didn’t recruit and there’s a lot of kids who don’t want to go to UConn,” Auriemma said. “I committed to Paige Bueckers very, very early and it would have been silly for me to say to Paige, ‘Hey listen, we’re going to put you in the backcourt and then I’m going to try really hard to recruit Caitlin Clark.’ I don’t do it that way.”



The move paid off for Auriemma, as Bueckers became a UConn legend, a national champion, and the No. 1 overall pick in the WNBA Draft.&nbsp;

UConn Huskies coach Geno Auriemma took issue with Caitlin Clark’s MVP odds during her rookie season. Clark, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, beat Auriemma’s team to advance to the 2024 NCAA championship game they would lose to the South Carolina Gamecocks.



Before going to the pros, Clark scored 21 points, grabbed nine rebounds and dished seven assists in a tight 71-69 win at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse. The relationship between Auriemma and Clark has always been complex.



The legendary coach didn’t believe Clark would have an easy path to adapt to the physicality of the WNBA, but she proved everybody wrong. Amid her remarkable rookie season, Auriemma was asked about the young guard’s odds to win the MVP award (+7500 at the time), admitting that it didn’t sit well with him.

While he admitted that Caitlin Clark wasn’t behind the MVP push, Auriemma went after the people trying to put her above established rookies.



“It’s unbelievable. It comes from a place where people want it so bad, but it’s misguided, and certainly she’s not driving it. She’s not out there campaigning for it. She’s handling her own playing, she has good days, she has bad days, she makes shots, she does not make shots,” Geno Auriemma said.



They never joined forces in college basketball, but Auriemma and Clark crossed paths multiple times during the latter’s career.

LSU Tigers women’s basketball head coach Kim Mulkey offered her perspective on how she would navigate the current state of amateur basketball. Mulkey, who has been a coach since 1985 (assistant coach at Louisiana Tech), shared some pointers while talking with Ashley Roberts on the “It’s Just Different” podcast.&nbsp;



On Friday, Roberts shared an excerpt of her interview with Mulkey, in which the Tigers’ coach discussed how she would approach raising a daughter in today’s basketball world.&nbsp;



The 63-year-old coach noted that several factors, especially when it comes to NIL deals, can make things more complex depending on one’s location.



“It’s different both at the high school and college (level) because now you’re dealing with NIL, and you have some states who can do NILs in high school and some that cannot. … It would be certainly different from when I played or my children played. But, you know, parenting is parenting. You love your child, you support your child … (but) don’t live through your child. Let your child navigate it by themselves with help from you, and they’ll do great,” she said



<h2>Kim Mulkey recalled her parenting mistakes&nbsp;</h2>



Mulkey, who has been with LSU since 2021, revealed what mistakes she made as a parent. She married Randy Robertson in 1987, with whom she had two kids, Kramer and Makenzie.

“I can tell you what I did as a parent,” she told Roberts. “I was a single parent. I never missed hardly anything they ever participated in. I always have a philosophy that my career is not more important than my children. And I made sure that I was there every time they played. Sometimes, I would go watch their practices just because I love sports.”

Kim Mulkey is reuniting with a former player ahead of what looks to be a challenging 2025-26 NCAA season. The veteran coach, who will enter her fifth season leading the LSU Tigers, will be reuniting with a member of the 2023 NCAA championship team.&nbsp;



Emily Ward, part of the squad that took down Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes in the championship game, is the new Director of Women’s Basketball Operations ahead of the new campaign.&nbsp;



Ward played with the Tigers from 2019-20 through the magical 2022-23 campaign, recording 38 games, although she only averaged 3.3 minutes and 1.0 points per outing. The forward, however, retired as an NCAA champion.&nbsp;

“I don’t know why he said that about the dark Caesars and baldies, that’s just his philosophy,” she said. “He thinks I should be looking for someone with a specific type of haircut, and he’s explained what that should look like,” she continued. “I’m not sure where he got that from, especially since he hasn’t really been around anyone I’ve dated. He’s just coming up with his own ideas.”

After finding out this person was also a New York Knicks fan, AJ Dybantsa took the opportunity to say that they beat his Boston Celtics only because Jayson Tatum went down with a season-ending injury.&nbsp;



“The only reason why the Knicks beat us is because (Jayson) Tatum got hurt, and the Patriots are just the best football team of all time,” Dybantsa said. “So if you want to defend your New York, you can.”



The Knicks beat the Celtics in six games, advancing to the Eastern Conference finals, where the Indiana Pacers took them out behind a terrific performance from Tyrese Haliburton.&nbsp;

UConn Huskies men’s basketball coach Dan Hurley is adding more accolades to his resume. After suffering a painful 77-75 loss to the Florida Gators in the 2025 NCAA tournament, which ruined Hurley’s plans to lead the Huskies to back-to-back-to-back championships, the veteran coach is set to return to the action with a renewed squad.&nbsp;



That won’t be the only venture Hurley will embark on this fall. Hurley wants to pass along some knowledge to those looking to excel at coaching or any other activity in life.&nbsp;



Hurley will have a 30-year coaching career in 2026 after he started as an assistant at St. Anthony High School. After stints with Rutgers, Wagner and Rhode Island, he secured the UConn job in 2018.



<h2>Dan Hurley announces a book for the fall&nbsp;</h2>



All that experience has allowed Hurley to become a proven winner in a competition where winning becomes more complicated every year. The coach shared a video announcing his upcoming book, “Never Stop,” which he hopes can help people learn from his experiences.

UConn Huskies senior guard Azzi Fudd is preparing for a season in which Paige Bueckers won’t be around. Fudd is set to take a bigger role on the team after Bueckers left for the WNBA.



While she’s bracing to lead the defending national champions, Fudd doesn’t think she’ll have the same approach Bueckers had when it came to leadership. After playing only two games in the 2023-24 season, she rebounded last year, playing 34 games and averaging 13.6 points, 2.0 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.4 steals per game.&nbsp;



She helped Bueckers and Co. return to the national championship game and win it against Dawn Staley’s South Carolina Gamecocks. Fudd faces a different challenge now, but she’s not running away from it.

“I don’t think I see it as pressure on me,” Fudd said via CT Insider. “I see it more as a challenge. Maybe that’s because I like challenges, and to think of it as pressure, then it becomes a little bit more heavy.”



Moreover, she outlined her approach to this role, distinguishing herself from Bueckers and Nika Muhl.&nbsp;



“I’m not gonna be like how Paige was a leader, how Nika (Mühl) was as a leader,” Fudd said. “I’m not gonna be super loud. I don’t think that’s in me to be like that. So, to find, like, who Azzi is as a leader, that’s gonna be my challenge.”



Fudd inherited a major responsibility, but she’s more than ready to take it on.&nbsp;
