Buffaloes HC Deion Sanders makes something clear about the starting QB after Shedeur’s departure

Shedeur Sanders' departure to the NFL opens a major question for his father, Deion, who now must decide on his replacement for the Colorado Buffaloes.

The Colorado Buffaloes are facing a somewhat unfamiliar situation: heading into the upcoming NCAAF season, head coach Deion Sanders will need to name a new starting quarterback. Until last season, it was Shedeur who held that role, but his departure to the NFL now presents a new challenge for his father.

Regarding this situation, Coach Prime spoke with the media and shared his thoughts on what the scenario will look like when the time comes to decide who will step in as his son’s natural successor to start Week 1 as the starting QB.

“Totally different,” Sanders said of his quarterbacks. “They can play man, but they approach the game totally different. But we got to be better and coaching to their strengths, we got to be better to put them in the right situations for success, but those guys can play.”

Kaidon Salter and freshman Julian Lewis are, at this point, the two alternatives being considered by Coach Prime to kick off a new chapter for the Buffaloes. It will be a matter of waiting to see which decision Sanders ultimately makes regarding who will take the reins of his team on the field.

The rising importance of Julian Lewis in Colorado’s QB conversation

While no official decision has been made by the coaching staff in Boulder regarding who will start at quarterback next season, Coach Deion Sanders addressed the media to speak on Julian Lewis’ situation.

“Self-explanatory,” Sanders said. “Nobody said that, man. Nobody said that. That, that’s not our plan. That’s not his plan, but, if it happens, it happens. If he sustains an injury that puts him in that situation? But you never know. I mean, the guy could, could be a two, or he could be a one. I don’t think we’re going to put him in a box like that. We’re not doing that.”

That said, the veteran head coach isn’t looking to leave anything to chance as the new College Football season approaches. Sanders knows he’ll need to be 100% certain about his decision when it comes to choosing whether it will be Lewis or Salter who takes the field as the Week 1 starter.
