Aaron Judge saw some of his New York Yankees teammates from last season depart for other teams, but one of them didn’t begin the 2025 campaign in the majors, instead settling for a minor league contract to join a new organization.
That former Yankees player and Judge teammate set to return to the major leagues is Alex Verdugo. Just a couple of weeks ago, Verdugo had reported to the minors on a contract with the Atlanta Braves, who are now calling him up to join their roster and be available to play for the Atlanta team.
While 2024 might not have been Verdugo’s best year with the Yankees, he was a contributor in the Bombers’ postseason run that ultimately led them to the World Series, where they eventually lost to the Dodgers.
Why Did the Braves Call Up Verdugo?
A primary reason for Verdugo’s return to the majors with the Braves is the team’s recent loss of Jurickson Profar, who faces an 80-plus game suspension. This absence left the team without an experienced player, creating a significant void on the roster early in the season.

For the Braves, Verdugo likely represents the best available option from their minor league affiliates. He is a player with a proven track record, having played for Boston, the Dodgers, and alongside Judge on the Yankees. He’s viewed as the most suitable replacement for another experienced outfielder.

Braves Send Another Player to the Minors
Despite the positive news of Verdugo’s major league return, the Braves decided to option Bryan De La Cruz to Triple-A. This move comes as a result of De La Cruz’s poor performance at the start of the 2025 season and his general lack of productivity since joining Atlanta from the Marlins.
