Carlos Mendoza is banking on a full complement of talent for the New York Mets to succeed in the 2025 season, and a positive MRI result offers hope for one key starting pitcher currently on the mend.
“He got an MRI today, he showed improvement. He played catch today at 60 feet. We gonna keep it like that for the next ten days or so what is like to continue let the injury heal. He just started throwing again but its just light,” Mendoza confirmed to SNY regarding Sean Manaea’s progress from his oblique injury.
Manaea’s injury was initially reported in late February, with the Mets announcing his unavailability for the MLB Opening Day. He has yet to appear in a single game for the Mets in 2025.
Manaea’s Frustration with Sideline Stint
Manaea previously voiced his displeasure with being sidelined, stating back in February when his injury was reported, “I hate being injured. If I’m not out there pitching, doing my job, it s—-. I’m going to do everything I can to get there as healthy and as quick as possible.”

Another crucial factor influencing Mendoza’s cautious approach with Manaea’s “light work” is a reported setback on April 1st. During a similar throwing progression, Manaea experienced a regression in his recovery, prompting the Mets to exercise greater caution this time around.

Mets Eager for Manaea’s Return to Rotation
Manaea’s debut season with the Mets was strong, posting a 12-6 record in 32 starts. His 3.47 ERA was a career-low for seasons with 20 or more starts, marking a significant improvement over his previous four campaigns. So far, the Mets’ starters have performed well, with Kodai Senga leading the pack with a 1.06 ERA in three starts. However, Manaea’s return could further bolster the pitching staff.
