Carlos Mendoza knows things haven’t been going well for Francisco Alvarez since his return from injury. The New York Mets catcher has been struggling at the plate, and the lack of production has raised concerns across the board.
Now in his fourth season with the Mets, Alvarez has faced multiple setbacks. He didn’t start the year in the majors due to injury, and since rejoining the team, he’s managed just 23 hits in 109 at-bats. Mendoza addressed the situation directly this week, making it clear the team is committed to helping him turn things around.
“We haven’t seen him driving the ball with authority, I feel like he’s on and off… we’ve just got to continue to grind, continue to help him, and hopefully he gets there,” Mendoza said of Alvarez, who is currently hitting .237.
No RBIs in nearly 20 days
While Alvarez hasn’t been the Mets’ most productive hitter, the drop-off has been steep. From May 5 to June 6, he recorded just one RBI and hasn’t scored a run in his last 10 games. He does have 7 hits in his last 8 appearances, but those numbers haven’t translated into runs.
Fans weigh in on Alvarez
After Mendoza’s comments were made public, Mets fans quickly took to X to voice their thoughts. Some called for patience, while others suggested it might be time to send the 23-year-old back to Triple-A.
“Extremely frustrating, but he’s only 23 and has as high a ceiling as any catcher in the league. He started falling off offensively when the comps to the best home run-hitting catcher stuff began,” one fan wrote.
“The Francisco Alvarez slander needs to stop. Let the kid figure it out, and support him along the way. We’re Mets fans, for goodness sake,” added Mark C. Healey of The Rockaway Wave.
