Clayton Kershaw made his fifth start of the season in a tough road series against the St. Louis Cardinals, earning his first win by decision of the year. But it wasn’t just the game that drew attention—Kershaw also had words for the Cardinals after they showed an old video clip targeting him.
Before the series finale on June 8, the Cardinals repeatedly played a clip of Matt Adams’ home run off Kershaw from the 2014 NLDS—a moment that helped eliminate the Dodgers from the playoffs over a decade ago. The video played in a loop prior to Kershaw taking the mound.
While the Cardinals won the series 2-1, Kershaw responded in Game 3 with a strong outing, showing veteran command: 5.0 innings, 6 hits, 1 earned run, 7 strikeouts, and no walks. It marked his second-best performance of the season so far.
Kershaw responds to Cardinals’ trolling tactic
Kershaw’s response was rather brief, saying, “I think it’s a little bush league, but I don’t expect anything less from these guys. So, it’s no worries.” He downplayed the situation, likely feeling satisfied with his performance on the mound.
The Cardinals’ tactic didn’t work—Kershaw allowed just one run over five innings and the Dodgers went on to win the game 7–3. St. Louis now sits at 36–29 overall, with a strong 22–11 record at home. The Dodgers, meanwhile, remain inconsistent on the road at 16–16.

Kershaw’s career dominance vs. Cardinals continues
Despite the history of that 2014 moment, Kershaw has largely had success against St. Louis. In 23 career appearances against the Cardinals, he owns a 12–6 record and a 2.84 ERA. Since 2018, he’s lost only once to them by decision across seven starts.
