Following the election of Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost, a spirited debate erupted across Chicago sports circles: Was the new pontiff aligned with the Chicago Cubs or the Chicago White Sox? Cubs fans tried to claim him early, even flashing “Hey Chicago, he’s a Cubs fan” across the iconic Wrigley Field marquee. But as it turns out, the answer has been sitting on tape for nearly two decades.
This week, blogger Joe Binder of Sox on 35th uncovered footage from Game 1 of the 2005 World Series that appears to show a younger Robert Prevost in the stands at U.S. Cellular Field, witnessing Bobby Jenks close out a 5–3 win over the Houston Astros. The White Sox would go on to sweep the series and capture their first title since 1917.
“He was never, ever a Cubs fan,” John Prevost, the pope’s brother, said in an interview with WGN. “So I don’t know where that came from. He was always a Sox fan.” It ended the debate once and for all.
Pope’s energy to the White Sox?
White Sox executives couldn’t be more thrilled. “It’s the kind of energy boost this team and fan base needed,” said Christine O’Reilly-Riordan, Senior VP of Community Relations. “We’re still in the ‘wow’ stage — just incredibly proud that one of ours is now the most recognizable figure in the world.”
And frankly, the team could use the blessing. After enduring a franchise-worst 121 losses in 2024, the 10–28 White Sox are in dire need of any momentum — spiritual or otherwise. Manager Will Venable is taking it in stride: “We’ll take it. Great to have him on our side, for sure.”

Chicago city’s rivalry
The upcoming City Series against the Cubs could come with added intrigue, as papal allegiance becomes part of the friendly rivalry. For now, though, White Sox fans are simply enjoying their divine moment in the sun.
