The Boston Red Sox are looking to fill the void left by Alex Bregman’s injury. With their infield in need of support, they’ve decided to call up a prospect who might provide the solution they’re looking for after putting up strong numbers in the minors.

“The Boston Red Sox are calling up infielder Marcelo Mayer, one of the top prospects in baseball, sources tell ESPN. With Alex Bregman injured, Boston needs infield help, and the 22-year-old Mayer — who’s hitting .271/.347/.471 at Triple-A — will get the first shot at his ABs,” Jeff Passan wrote on X regarding Mayer’s call-up to the majors.

Mayer’s big MLB moment has arrived. In 2025, while playing for the Worcester Red Sox, he had already delivered 9 home runs in 43 games, along with 46 hits, 31 runs, and 43 RBIs — a very strong first half of the season for the young infielder.

Mayer’s reaction to the call-up was priceless

According to a report from Natalie Noury, Worcester’s manager spoke with Mayer to give him the details of his opportunity with the Red Sox, and the young rookie reacted exactly as expected — with a big smile.

“I sat [Marcelo] down and said, ‘Listen, they called me and they don’t want you to play game two either. Hard for you to play game two here if they want you to play game two at Fenway.’ He started clapping, big smile.
