The Boston Red Sox are once again witnessing a disappointing performance from Tanner Houck, as the right-hander endured another rough outing. This comes less than a month after a similarly disastrous start, raising concerns about his consistency.
Houck struggled mightily, surrendering multiple runs in just over two innings. This time, he was tagged for 11 earned runs in 2.1 innings pitched. Previously, on April 14th, he allowed 12 runs (11 earned) in 2.1 innings, marking his worst performance in a Red Sox uniform this season.
Adding insult to injury, Houck now holds an unfavorable MLB franchise record, surpassing Doug Birdâs 1983 mark of allowing 11 earned runs in 2.2 innings as a Red Sox starter. As Bob Nightengale noted on X, this dubious distinction has now been eclipsed twice in less than a month.
Houckâs Season Hasnât Been All Bad
Despite those two disastrous outings where the Red Sox suffered significant losses due to his struggles, Houck has also showcased flashes of strong performance. Heâs had several games allowing three runs or fewer, including his second win of the season against the Orioles on April 3rd.

Following his 12-run debacle on April 14th, Houck appeared to regain some stability, allowing eight runs over his next three starts. While his teammates havenât always provided robust offensive support, another implosion of allowing over ten runs is far from typical for a starting pitcher.

Upcoming Series for the Red Sox
It remains uncertain when Houck will get his next opportunity on the mound. However, the Red Sox are set to return home on May 16th for three separate series: against the Braves, the Mets, and a four-game set against the Orioles. While not confirmed, Houck could potentially get another start during one of those later home games this month.
