New York Yankees fans are often the first to criticize players for poor performance, especially when it involves not covering their positions well. Anthony Volpe recently became a āvictimā of that punishment, as he was booed by the crowd at Yankee Stadium.
The stadium was once again the scene of a bad play by Volpe, the kind that makes people question whether he should continue playing at that position. He fielded an easy ball, but instead of throwing it to first base, he chose to throw it to second, a decision the crowd did not like.
Fortunately, Volpe wasnāt alone, as Aaron Boone defended him with a lengthy message trying to justify the shortstopās decision, a play that would lead to him being booed by fans and heavily criticized on social media.
Yankees Fans Boo Volpe
It is not the first time Yankees fans have booed one of their own players, but with Volpe, the criticism is becoming normal due to the number of errors and poor plays he has had this year, especially at a sensitive position like shortstop.
āIf youāre going to use Giancarlo Stanton off the bench there in the eighth, and not save him for Aroldis Chapman in the ninth, then why not pinch hit him for Anthony Volpe instead of Ryan McMahon?ā Max Goodman wrote on X.
Fans Online Turn Against Volpe
People on social media were calling for the Yankees to use Jose Caballero at shortstopāsaying thatās why he was brought to the teamāand to bench Volpe immediately to āheal the situationā at the position.
āAnthony Volpe is putting together one of the worst stretches of baseball Iāve ever seen since my college career,ā one fan wrote on X. Another said, āThe Yankees have to bench Anthony Volpe for Jose Caballero for the rest of this series. If Ben Rice can catch this shouldnāt be a problem.ā
