Aaron Judge has certainly been quite limited in recent games for the New York Yankees. The team has been using him as a designated hitter (DH), with his spot in the outfield being covered by teammates. It appears this will continue in the upcoming four-game series against the Boston Red Sox.
It was more than obvious that Aaron Boone would be asked about Judge playing in right field, but it seems that wonât be the case. The Yankees manager wasnât even sure if Judge would be considered for the outfield, simply stating, âI donât know.â
Boone referred to Judgeâs situation as ânothing new, continue in the progress [injury recovery] progress,â at least offering hope that he would return to the outfield at some point. ââŠhopefully we get to that point soon, but I donât know when that is.â
Has It Been Bad for Judge to Play as a DH?
Not really; his production hasnât dropped as some expected. In 13 games as a DH, he has a .227 batting average, which isnât bad overall. He has produced a total of 7 RBI, 9 runs, 10 hits, 14 walks, and 3 home runs in 44 at-bats. Overall, he has maintained his batting average at .330, though his average was above .340 in July before he transitioned to DH.
The last time Judge played in right field was in a Yankees home loss to the Phillies on July 25. It was a poor game for him, and it was already suspected that he was injured or limited for outfield play.
Who is Covering Right Field for Judge?
In the most recent game, Cody Bellinger played a bit in right field before Giancarlo Stanton came in to cover the position. Stanton has been seen there in a couple of games, and Boone recently said that âBig Gâ was taking longer than usual to recover after playing the outfield, but he appears to be doing better now.
