Despite boasting a star-studded roster, the Boston Celtics are emerging from a challenging season. The New York Knicks ousted them in the conference semifinals of the playoffs, and to compound their troubles, they lost Jayson Tatum to an injury for the entire 2025-26 NBA season. Nevertheless, a standout performer from the Summer League has reportedly expressed interest in joining Joe Mazzulla’s roster.
According to Noa Dalzell of SB Nation, Charles Bassey has expressed keen interest in signing with the Boston Celtics, despite a competing offer from Serbia’s Partizan Belgrade. His potential move to Boston comes at an opportune moment, following the departure of former G-League MVP JD Davison in July, which created a void on their roster.
Charles has defied skeptics and emerged as a standout player in the Summer League, consistently demonstrating his prowess on the court. He has averaged an impressive 15.3 points and 11 rebounds per game, effectively silencing critics and showcasing his ability to make a significant impact.
His performance has not gone unnoticed by Celtics Summer League head coach Matt Reynolds. He quickly praised Charles, saying, “It was just clear that that guy could make an impact in the game, and you saw that throughout the course of the game today… I think he was huge for us,” he said, as reported by Simone.

Charles Bassey praises the Boston Celtics as rumors swirl about possible move
Charles Bassey has confirmed that he is not currently in negotiations with the Boston Celtics, but his recent comments conveyed deep respect for the franchise and hinted at his aspirations. “That’s a playoff team…They go to the playoffs every year. So, obviously, just learning from those guys. It’s great for me. I mean, I went to the playoffs one time… I’m just going to learn a lot from those guys,” he said, via Jack Simmone.

Not only do his words, but also the changes to the Celtics’ roster, suggest that his arrival represents a significant opportunity. He is a player who can contribute defensively without neglecting his scoring ability. Yet, there is no guarantee that he will join the franchise, and Charles seems unconcerned, stating, “I don’t need to talk about that right now.”
Charles Bassey’s Spurs struggles raise doubts as he eyes move to the Boston Celtics
Although Charles Bassey remains open to joining the Celtics, his recent performance with the San Antonio Spurs has raised concerns among fans. In 90 games with the franchise, he averaged only 4.7 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. Additionally, frequent injuries curtailed his development with the team.
Despite these concerns, the Celtics may face a need to acquire a center due to the departures of Kristaps Porzingis and Al Horford. Given that Bassey would not come with a hefty price tag, he could be a wise gamble for the franchise. His proven ability to adapt well to team rosters positions him as a promising addition, especially if he continues to perform at this level in the 2025-26 season.
