Houston Rockets star Kevin Durant has long been considered one of the greatest scorers in NBA history. For many, he’s the most complete offensive player the league has ever seen. That elite status comes not only from his skillset but also from the mentality he brings every night — a belief that he’s simply the best.

Still, when asked to name his Mount Rushmore of small forwards, Durant responded with both confidence and reverence. While including himself, the Rockets forward added LeBron James, Kawhi Leonard, and Larry Bird to his personal list of all-time greats. “LeBron. Kawhi. Larry Bird,” he said — a short but impactful answer that speaks volumes.

Durant’s picks highlight three of the most accomplished small forwards the NBA has ever seen. Leonard, currently with the Clippers, has made his name as one of the top two-way players of his generation. With two NBA championships, two Finals MVPs, six All-NBA selections, seven All-Defensive Team honors, and a steals title, his resume is as balanced as his game.

Bird, the legendary Boston Celtics forward, had a 13-year career filled with accolades. After winning Rookie of the Year, Bird led the Celtics to three NBA championships and earned three league MVPs along the way. He also won two Finals MVPs, made 12 All-Star teams, and was selected 10 times to the All-NBA Team. Bird’s legacy was further cemented with a place on the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team.

LeBron James, entering his 23rd NBA season, continues to play at an elite level despite turning 40. He holds the all-time scoring record and has collected four NBA championships, four Finals MVPs, and four league MVPs. Even in his fifth decade, James remains a championship contender and a central figure in the NBA.

Durant, of course, also earns his place on this Mount Rushmore. Widely viewed as a generational talent, he’s one of the most unguardable offensive players the league has ever seen. With two NBA titles, two Finals MVPs, a regular season MVP, four scoring titles, 15 All-Star selections, and 11 All-NBA nods, the Rockets forward has built a Hall of Fame career of his own.

What makes Durant’s opinion resonate even more is his deep love for the game. He studies its history, respects those who came before him, and competes with the belief that he belongs among the greats. When a player of his caliber names a list, it’s not just a take — it’s a statement.

Durant’s Mount Rushmore may spark debate, as most great lists do. But with the accomplishments of the players he chose — along with his own extraordinary résumé — there’s no denying that every name on it has earned the right to stand among the best small forwards in NBA history.
