49ers HC Kyle Shanahan provides key injury update on Christian McCaffrey ahead of 2025 NFL season

Kyle Shanahan is confident that his San Francisco 49ers will return to being a competitive force in the NFL, and for that, he needs his roster to be fully healthy. Last season, a serious injury sidelined Christian McCaffrey during the final stretch of the campaign, but the coaching staff is optimistic about getting one of their star players back for the upcoming season.

In a recent conversation with the media, Shanahan provided an important injury update on the status of the talented running back, and even discussed how the team is approaching the upcoming season from an offensive standpoint.

“Christian is healthy,” the San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said last week, via NBC Sports Bay Area. “He’s doing great.”

The recurring injuries suffered by the former Panthers running back are a concern for the coach, who must explore alternatives at the position, seeking the best options to provide offensive support for Brock Purdy.

“You always hope to address it every year,” the HC said of the running back position. “Of course, we’re set with McCaffrey, but every single year we’ve gone through this except for two years, we’ve gone through four running backs. Most teams do, so you always got to be prepared for that.”

The focus set on the Draft

With just days to go before the upcoming NFL Draft, many franchises are beginning to assess various options to strengthen their rosters for the upcoming season. The San Francisco 49ers are no exception, and given McCaffrey’s situation, the running back position could eventually be one to reinforce.

“We got Isaac in there working, and we’re pumped to get Patrick back,” Shanahan said regarding this situation. “And we’ll see if we can add someone in the draft. We’d like to every year.”

While the Bay Area is betting on having McCaffrey fully healthy and being one of the key weapons in the offense, in the event that it becomes necessary, they wouldn’t be opposed to selecting another RB from College Football, especially given the talented pool of players in the upcoming draft.
