Becoming a true contender in the AFC West won’t be easy, given how much parity has developed in recent years — even with the Chiefs continuing to dominate the division. But the Los Angeles Chargers want to be the team to beat, and with Justin Herbert and Jim Harbaugh leading the way, they’ll look to make their mark starting in Week 1 of the upcoming NFL season.
However, all the pieces need to fall into place, and every player on the roster will have to give their all to make that goal a reality. Herbert, the undisputed leader of this team, has one Achilles’ heel — and his head coach knows it’s something that must be strengthened.
In a recent conversation with the media, Harbaugh revealed what he believes is his signal-caller’s biggest weakness — one they plan to work on tirelessly, aiming to improve it week after week.
“This is the truth, Justin Herbert’s biggest weakness is all of those that he’s counting on on offense — coaches, offensive line, playmakers, receivers, running backs — to get up to his level,” Harbaugh said in an interview with Jamie Erdahl and Manti Te’o on Back Together Weekend. “I wake up every day to try to get to his level.”

Head coach Jim Harbaugh of the Los Angeles Chargers speaks with Justin Herbert #10 prior to the game fakc at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium on December 08, 2024 in Kansas City, Missouri.
Still, he remains confident in his quarterback’s talent for what lies ahead: “I see him at the level, just the highest level as a quarterback. First five seasons, nobody’s thrown for more yards in the history of the NFL, and everything he does is, you just don’t change a thing, but whatever it is, conditioning, it’s too easy. Everything we do, we try to pull him back, because you never have to talk him into doing anything. He’s been in here every day.”

Full confidence in what lies ahead
Since bursting onto the NFL scene, Justin Herbert has steadily risen as the leader of the Chargers, elevating an offense that has become one of the team’s strongest assets — something his head coach is confident they can continue to build on in pursuit of big accomplishments moving forward.
“Him and Greg Roman, they’re the architects of the offense, they know it best, and I think that’s going to pay good dividends for us,” the HC said. “Everything we’re doing now we’re doing for a second time, and it’s clear and obvious that all of us, we’ve got to put the work in and get on his level.”
He also added: “I want Justin to just be exactly who he is, how he is, he does everything at the highest level, he’s a tone-setter, he’s the example-setter.”
