The Detroit Lions’ impressive run last NFL season means they won’t be drafting from a top spot this year. Still, GM Brad Holmes and his staff understand the importance of making smart decisions to reinforce the roster in the best possible way.
In recent comments shared via NFL.com, the experimented GM opened up about his thoughts on the highly anticipated event set to take place on April 24 at Lambeau Field, where the Lions won’t be on the clock until pick No. 28.
“I think you can get in trouble chasing needs sometimes, and then you’re depending on a rookie,” Brad Holmes firmly stated to the press. “You do the best you can, but nobody has a crystal ball. So, it can be a tough world to live in.”
He also added: “There’s just a level of patience you have to (have). When you start chasing need, it’s like that need might make sense for right now at this time. We make these picks for future investments. We kind of live in a society that everything is, ‘Right now! Right now! Right now!'”

Detroit Lions general manager Brad Holmes (L) and head football coach Dan Campbell talk after the Detroit Lions Training Camp on July 28, 2021 in Allen Park, Michigan.
As of now, Dan Campbell’s team holds seven picks heading into next week’s draft. All eyes will be on how the process unfolds, as it will ultimately reveal the newest additions to the Lions’ roster.

Areas the Lions need to address in the Draft
The serious injury suffered by Aidan Hutchinson last season exposed a significant gap at the edge rusher position — a concern that’s being closely monitored not only by the coaching staff but also by the front office.
Still, if Campbell’s team hopes to land one of the top edge prospects in this class, it won’t be easy — few franchises are expected to be eager to strike a deal with Detroit for such a late first-round pick. At least, that’s how Brad Holmes sees it…
“There’s just some teams that don’t want to go that far back,” Holmes said. “It takes two. So, it’s hard to say like, ‘Man, we should do this.’ And even if we do there’s no telling that the other team is willing to go back.”
Additionally, other positions the franchise is expected to target include safety, wide receiver, and offensive line — all areas where added depth and talent could make a difference heading into the new NFL season.
