Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers will eventually reach an agreement with TJ Watt, according to the latest report from Ian Rapoport. However, the resolution won’t come anytime soon and could extend into the final part of training camp.
“I still believe it’s going to work out, but I haven’t heard that number ($40 million per season) and I haven’t heard that anything is imminent. The Steelers do take things right up to the start of the season before they just cut it off.”
The linebacker is one of the most iconic players of the franchise in recent years and is seeking a new deal that would allow him to retire as a member of the Steelers. Given his importance in keeping the team as a Super Bowl contender, it seems like only a matter of time before a deal is reached.
Will TJ Watt sign contract extension with Steelers?
TJ Watt will reportedly sign a contract extension with the Steelers, but among several NFL insiders, there is still no consensus on whether he will earn more money than Myles Garrett. Rapoport noted that he’s not sure the player will reach the $40 million per year mark.
“If he gets more than Myles Garrett, I would say that is awesome for TJ. These are the guys you pay. I hope he gets it. These are tough deals to do. As you get a little older on these third contracts, you’re still awesome, but, you’re getting older. So, teams have to square that and kind of figure it out.”
