NFL News: Aaron Rodgers gets clear message from Vikings GM about JJ McCarthy, QB1 job amid Steelers rumors

The Pittsburgh Steelers appear to be the most likely destination for Aaron Rodgers, but the Minnesota Vikings don't rule out having both A-Rod and J.J. McCarthy in the 2025 NFL season.

With the New York Giants signing Russell Wilson on Tuesday, the Pittsburgh Steelers have one less competitor for Aaron Rodgers. However, the Minnesota Vikings are still open to having both the 4x NFL MVP and J.J. McCarthy on their quarterback room.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah let everyone know that the team doesn’t rule out making a move for Rodgers this offseason.

“Vikings GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah says the Vikings are comfortable with the QB room right now, but wouldn’t say that he’d 100% close the door on Aaron Rodgers depending on scenarios,” Alec Lewis of The Athletic wrote on X.

On top of that, Adolfo-Mensah added that Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell has talked “directly” with Rodgers. Even though they didn’t get to work together in the NFL yet, both were contemporaries as quarterbacks in the league and interacted with each other throughout the years.

Earlier this month, NFL media reported that the Vikings want to give McCarthy the chance to start after missing the 2024 season due to injury. While the team knew that this decision meant risking Rodgers joining the Steelers or another team, it didn’t feel like making an early move for the veteran QB.

The 41-year-old is still without a team after ending a two-year tenure with the New York Jets this offseason. Rodgers is reportedly considering not playing in 2025 instead of joining the Steelers or Vikings.

A big decision for Rodgers

Adofo-Mensah’s recent comments suggest that the Vikings are still interested in Rodgers, even if they took the risk of missing out at the start of free agency. Perhaps, if the weeks pass and A-Rod is still available, Minnesota could be a realistic landing spot.

Of course, it will depend on what the former Green Bay Packers star expects this year. If his intention is to be a guaranteed starter, then the Steelers would make more sense. If he has no problem with adjusting to the Vikings’ plans, then a return to the NFC North could work. Only time will tell.
