NFL News: Andy Reid provides latest update on Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes’ injured key weapons

The Kansas City Chiefs are looking to get two key weapons back for Patrick Mahomes in the 2025 NFL season, and head coach Andy Reid has provided a crucial update on both situations.

Andy Reid wants to have all of his offensive players back for the 2025 NFL season and is using the offseason to wait on two key weapons for Patrick Mahomes. The Kansas City Chiefs’ goal is to get back in the hunt to win the Super Bowl.

On one hand, wide receiver Rashee Rice is making steady progress in his rehab after a knee injury ended his 2024 season. Just a few days ago, reports stated that Mahomes’ potential key weapon has begun running as part of his recovery process—an encouraging sign on his road back to the field.

At the same time last season, tight end Jared Wiley tore his ACL during a Week 9 practice. His absence, together with Rice’s, gives Reid’s Chiefs two offensive pieces well worth getting back if he hopes to strengthen that side of the ball.

Reid’s latest update on Rice and Wiley

“I can’t necessarily give you the return date. They’re doing well. That’s taking place right now, but I can’t tell you when they will be back exactly here. Both have been busting their tail. They’re running, which is good. We’ll just see how it goes going forward here. We don’t have them here on the field right now with us, so we’ve got to see the football part of it as we go,” HC Reid said to arrowheadpride.com.

Details on Rice’s injury

The injury occurred in Week 4 of the 2024 season, when Rice tore the lateral collateral ligament (LCL) in his right knee while trying to recover a loose ball after an interception. Although an ACL tear was initially feared, the final diagnosis was damage to the posterolateral corner of the knee, which required reconstructive surgery.

Details on Wiley’s injury

Wiley went down in the days leading up to last season’s Week 9 game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Andy Reid called it a “freak injury,” as the tight end got hurt while making a routine cut in practice. He is expected to be on track for the 2025 training camp.
